Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

Incomplete gold finger-ring, set with a colourless stone. The hoop is narrow and broken into two parts, with about a quarter missing. It is D-shaped in cross-section, flaring from a minimum of 1.2 mm wide and 1.4 mm thick to a maximum of 1.8 mm wide and 2 mm thick at the junction with the bezel. Although this would seem to leave little room for decoration on the shoulders, there is in fact a great deal of complicated scrolly engraving extending around half the hoop and ending with a short longitudinal groove. The bezel is 8.5 mm square, and tapers to a point underneath with a finely…

A complete gold finger-ring. Measuring 23.5mm in external diameter and c18.5mm in internal diameter with a hoop width of 47mm. Exterior of the hoop formed of 12 hemispherical beads. The interior of the hoop is plain. For a ring of similar form, the interior inscribed Feare God only * *, see O. M. Dalton, Catalogue of Finger-rings in the British Museum (London, 1912), cat. no. 1150. Comparable rings with capital letter inscriptions, such as the example reported in 2004 from Billericay, Essex (2004 T353), suggest a later 16th or 17th century date-range for this ring. Object assessed…

A gold Portugese half Moeda with a value of 2000 Reis, of King John V (Ioannes) of Portugal 1706-50. One Moeda or Moedore meaning 'Port. moeda da ouro' or 'money of gold,' is normally worth 4000 reis, this type of coin is also sometimes called a crusado or cruzado because of the cross on the reverse, 1 crusado is worth 400 reis so our half moidore which is worth 2000 reis is 5 crusados. Large gold finger-ring. The external diameter is 23.5 mm and the internal diameter is 19 mm. The hoop is 7 mm wide, and is D-shaped or very slightly biconvex in cross-section. It is 2.5 mm thick and weighs 13.69g. The exterior is completely undecorated; the interior has an engraved 'posy' between two slightly different ornamental scrolly motifs. The posy reads (in Italian, and in italic lettering) Questo ci, fa una. This can be translated as 'This to (or for) us, makes one'. A slightly freer translation might be 'This ring makes us one'.
