Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

Description: A complete bust somewhat distorted gold and enamel finger ring dating to the Post-Medieval period, a variant on the 'memento mori' types. The ring demonstrates a circular bezel engraved with the design of a facing grinning skull. Around the skull, four sub-rectangular recessed panels forming a ring around it display the following Latin inscription (interestingly, rendered by moulding rather than engraving): RES/PIC/E FI/NEM (RESPICE FINEM). This translates broadly as 'think to the end', an allusion to the inevitability of death. Each side of the bezel, the recessed should…

Medieval gold finger ring with pryamidal jewel or glass inset. This ring has a large pryamid-shaped head around the inset glass/jewel, which is bordered on either side of the band by incised slightly-curved arches. The band is a single band with a deep groove that makes it look like two thinner bands of gold running side-by-side. The jewel is small and dark in colour, although its is not easy to identify. It is held in place by the gold setting. A single, small circle of gold solder is located on the inner face of the band, opposite the inset jewel. The thickness of the band…

Early-medieval continental enamelled gold mount from Suffolk (2004 T141) On a gold base is soldered a round box which holds in its field the enamelled decoration. The seam is covered by a filigree wire. The design is achieved by means of large cloisons (cells) made up of continuous ribbons of thin gold sheet, which hold the enamel. The visible upper surface of the cloison walls, economically, draws the design itself. This shows a male frontal bust (head and neck), with large almonds eyes and nose formed by one continuous strip curled on itself, a small mouth and ?moustache above.…

A complete, but slightly bent and damaged gold finger-ring. The hoop is bent and now oval in shape measuring 23mm by 18mm in size. A Treasure find, Roman gold ear-ring of rectangular form, distorted and lacking its hook. It comprises two plates joined at the margins. The front face is embossed with a decorative swag border with tiny circular indentations. There is likely to have been a central setting in this face but this is no longer clear due to the central torn hole through both plates marking the former point of attachment of the hook.
