A complete but distorted gold probable finger ring. Consisting of a simple hoop with a rectangular section. The outer face is smooth however in one area there are tiny traces of possible vertical grooves, these may be original decoration or due to damage/wear, they are extremely faint. Discussion: This finger ring is very undiagnostic and could possibly be Roman or later in date, but it is impossible to certify that it was deposited prior to 1708 as stipulated in the Treasure Act. Dimensions: Measuring 17.16mm by 15.33mm externally and 15.53mm by 13.61mm internally, the hoop is …

Late 17th or early 18th century gold posy ring Description: A D-section hoop decorated on the exterior with a floral scroll, probably once enamelled black but almost no enamel now remains. The interior inscribed in lower case: 'A good life a happie death', followed by the engraved outline of a skull, again probably once enamelled and a maker's mark in a rectangular shield. Discussion: The mark is very unclear and may possibly read SW or MS; it does not appear to be recorded in Grimwade (London Goldsmiths 1697-1937) or Jackson (English Goldsmiths and their Marks). Moralising inscriptio…

a complete gold Post-Medieval finger ring. The hoop is circular and D-shaped. It is a Posy ring and has two motifs, each repeated once on the opposite side of the hoop and separated by a pattern of three leaves on a stalk. The motifs are formed by incised line decoration and depict a) a lozenge-shape flanked by linked curved lines, one of which has a white metal infill and the other is plain; b)a pair of inter-linked hearts. The four leaf patterns between the four motifs have part green and part bronze-coloured infill. On the inside of the hoop there is an inscription which reads 'I …

A gold finger ring of Post-Medieval date. It has a plain hoop measuring 20.6mm in external diameter, 16.97mm in internal diameter, and the hoop width 5.5mm. It weighs 7.01g. There is an inscription on the inside of the hoop which reads:" As true to the as death to me ,". Judoe Rudoe, BM, notes that the inscription was in use by 1624 (recorded by Joan Evans) but there is no datable maker's mark, and the ring could be 17th or 18th century in date. The inscription is probably not a mourning one in the sense of commemorating a deceased person but rather a memento mori or reminder of death.
