Gold Ecu d'or au soleil de Bretagne of Francis I of France (1515-1547). Kelleher (forthcoming) notes that there have only been five Francis I gold coins recorded as finds in England to date, all from hoards (one from Bearpark, County Durham, four from Ely, Cambridgeshire). This coin represents the first recorded "stray" find of a Francis I gold coin in England.

The backplate of a late post medieval gold locket. The remaining part of the locket is made from thin gold sheet. The outer face of the backplate has a stamped floral design with continuous leaf pattern around the edge which develop in five places as defined leaves towards the centre around an open lily type flower. There is a very small amount of copper alloy wire protruding from the rim which may have originally been part of the inside of a loop for hanging the locket or may just have provided a rigid inner framework for the edge of the backplate. On the inside the thin gold sheet i…

Description: A complete bust somewhat distorted gold and enamel finger ring dating to the Post-Medieval period, a variant on the 'memento mori' types. The ring demonstrates a circular bezel engraved with the design of a facing grinning skull. Around the skull, four sub-rectangular recessed panels forming a ring around it display the following Latin inscription (interestingly, rendered by moulding rather than engraving): RES/PIC/E FI/NEM (RESPICE FINEM). This translates broadly as 'think to the end', an allusion to the inevitability of death. Each side of the bezel, the recessed should…

Description: A complete gold mourning type finger ring dating to the Post-Medieval period, exactly 1709. The hoop is 'D' shaped in section and broadly oval in plan (squashed somewhat in post-depositional damage), plain on its outer face except for the deeply engraved depiction of a human skull at its apex. Traces of black enamel preserved in the recesses of the latter infer that at one point it was once fully decorated in this manner. The interior of the hoop is engraved with an inscription relating to the deceased individual the ring was made to represent in memoriam, reading as foll…

Description: A complete but somewhat distorted gold finger ring dating to the Post-Medieval period. The ring comprises a now sub-circular 'D' sectioned hoop, its outer surface demonstrating incised decoration and an inscription or 'posy' visible on its inner. The decoration on the latter consists three motifs that repeat in an irregular pattern: cinquefoils/five-petalled flowers (5), oval-bodied insects (3) and bees (2). The two bees are both positioned within two flowers, while the insects appear to be beetle like and demonstrate a segmented carapace with spiked legs and dots on the …

Description: A complete gold signet ring dating to the Post-Medieval period, c. 1600-1700. It demonstrates a circular plano-convex sectioned hoop, with thin shoulders that expand rapidly into a large circular bezel. On the upper surface of the bezel, the initials 'I C', separated by a central lobed ribbon motif have been engraved, all the latter within an outer incised border. The decoration and inner surfaces of the ring itself are all incredibly worn, suggesting that this ring was worn intensively. Date: 1600-1700 Dimensions: The ring hoop measures a maximum of 20.52mm in exte…
