Description: an incomplete and somewhat damaged gold finger ring dating to the Post-Medieval period, c. 1600-1700. The hoop is 'D' shaped in section and rather worn at its base, distorted on one side due to old damage. On the inside of the hoop at one shoulder is a rather crude inscription, which appears to read; 'P. HIL(?)'-the script seemingly of 17th century character. Description: A complete gold signet ring dating to the Post-Medieval period, c. 1600-1700. It demonstrates a circular plano-convex sectioned hoop, with thin shoulders that expand rapidly into a large circular bezel. On the upper surface of the bezel, the initials 'I C', separated by a central lobed ribbon motif have been engraved, all the latter within an outer incised border. The decoration and inner surfaces of the ring itself are all incredibly worn, suggesting that this ring was worn intensively. Date: 1600-1700 Dimensions: The ring hoop measures a maximum of 20.52mm in external …

Description: An incomplete gold finger ring dating to the Medieval period, c. 1150-1400. This is a stirrup type ring, demonstrating a rectangular-sectioned flattened hoop and shoulders that extend to the bezel, which is constricted and thinner with a plano-convex section. In the apex of the latter is a recessed circular hollow which presumably would have originally accommodated a stone or gem setting (though this is now missing). The shoulders and hoop are inscribed with the Old French motto '+AMIE TV ES MA VIE' (Friend, you are my life). Despite some post-depositional damage which has…

Description: A complete gold post-medieval posy ring. It has a simple plain gold band, D-shaped in cross-section with the inscription 'Honored for your vertues' in italic script on the inner surface. There is a small mark after the inscription, but this is probably not a maker's mark. It survives in very fine condition. Date: c. AD 1650-1800 Dimensions: Diameter: 16.62mm, width: 2.67mm, thickness: 1.25mm, weight: 1.84g Discussion: The style of lettering suggests a late 17th or 18th century date. By Anna Booth SCCAS June 2016
