2006 T480: Post-medieval gold finger ring Date: 16th or early 17th century Description: Complete gold ring. The ring takes the form of a band with a significant groove around its circumference giving the impression of double bands joined by a central plain band of gold. Each of the ‘two’ bands is decorated with a mirrored design of running design of curlicues and diagonal bands. In the gaps of the design, some white enamel can be seen to survive. To the inner face of the band is an inscription which is in capital letters and in Latin: MEDIOCRIA FIRMA followed by a ?blunder…

A gold half noble of Edward III (AD1327-1377), dating AD 1361-69. The obverse depicts the king standing facing forward in a ship. He is crowned and armoured, holding a sword in right hand and a shield of England and France in left hand. The inscription reads EDWARD DEI GRA REX ANGL DNS HYB Z AQT. The reverse depicts a floriated cross with a fleur-de-lys at the end of each arm and an ornamented compartment containing the kings initials (e) in the centre. Gold sheet mount with applied filigree and granulation ornament on the upper surface. The sheet is an irregular discoid shape which flares slightly on one side to incorporate space for a pierced hole, probably for attachment. A gold annular brooch dating to the Medieval period. The frame is circular in plan and 'D' shaped in section (flat back, curving front) with two opposed oval collets which taper towards the top, both now empty but once would have contained a cabochon stone. Description: A gold finger-ring of late Roman date, c. AD 200-400, which has been squashed almost flat. The bezel has an oval collet for the oval intaglio (now missing). The setting has a border around it formed of a narrow projecting flange decorated with a ‘rope’ design. The ring is Henig type V/ Guiraud type 4e characterised by its wide, flattened hoop and rectangular bezel and dates to the second or third century.
