Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint debitage blade, of Mesolithic date, 10,000 BC - 4000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary blade of opaque tan coloured flint with a small area of cortex on the right side of the distal end. The distal end is missing, snapped off. It is sub-rectangular with a rounded proximal end. The dorsal face is covered with long blade removal scars and has a triple arris. There is some edge damage, but the blade is not retouched. It is 62.6mm long, 22.1mm wide and 5.4mm thick. 8.9g.

An incomplete flint scraper, or perhaps a retouched flake, of uncertain date, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a primary flake of translucent dark brown flint. The proximal end is missing, snapped off. It is sub-rectangular with a rounded distal end. The dorsal face is covered with cortex. There is slightly invasive, sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch on the right side and sporadically on the distal end. It is 31.2mm long, 25.5mm wide and 5.5mm thick. 4.8g.

A flint scraper, or perhaps a retouched flake, of uncertain date, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of translucent dark brown flint. It is D shaped in plan with removal scars covering the dorsal face. All the edges have short, stepped, abrupt retouch. The flint seems thin for a scraper, but the abrupt retouch rules out a shaper implement such as an arrowhead or cutting tool. The flint is 19.9mm long, 16.4mm wide and 4.6mm thick. 1.3g.

A collection of seven flint flakes, the waste material from flint working (debitage). The flakes all show evidence of having been struck, but are not tool forms. They are heavily patinated and the flint appears to be light grey with some yellow staining. Together they weigh 16.75g.

A flint awl which is formed on a tertiary flake which is sub-triangular in plan. The flake is 24.5mm long, 21.8mm wide and 6.1mm thick. The awl is formed at the proximal end of the right side by taking removals from the proximal and right sides. Both sides of the awl are also retouched with very fine removals. Cortex survives on the left side. This tool probably dates from the Early Neolithic. A similar example can be seen in Butler (2005) on page 129, number 1. The flint is closely grained and is light grey in colour. The flint is damaged which may be the result of water action since…

A secondary flint flake which is nearly heart shaped in plan. It is 32.7mm long, 24.2mm wide and 8.2mm thick. The dorsal face is partially cortical. On the left ventral side is a removal facet with evidence of platform preparation. The flint is brownish grey. The flake is not retouched. It is not possible to suggest a specific date for this flake. The flint is damaged which may be the result of water action since it was found near the sea.

Four flint flakes that are the result of flint working but that have not been worked into tools themselves. All have irregular chipped surfaces or wear which may have been caused by being on a beach at some point. It is not possible to suggest a specific date for these flakes. 1) Blade which is 63.7mm long, 25.4mm wide and 13.9mm thick. The dorsal face is very rough and irregular but there are clear removal facets on the ventral face. Speckled light grey flint. 2) Secondary flake which is 39.4mm long, 23.1mm wide and 5.4mm thick. Irregular dorsal surface. Black coloured flint. 3) Flak…
