A fragment from a handmade ceramic vessel of Anglo-Saxon date, preserving the complete profile of one side of the wall, the rim, base and one lug handle. It has a dark grey sandy fabric with a little mica, some quartz and calcite inclusions. To one side at the top of the rim is a lug handle that is sub-rectangular in shape and section and has a transverse circular perforation. The rim of the vessel is approximately 7cm in diameter, is plain and undecorated. The exterior surfaces are heavily encrusted with perhaps some traces of burning/sooting and the underside of the base is flat, cir…

A rim sherd, possibly from an Early-Medieval Thetford type ware vessel, probably a jar or jug. It has a pale grey fabric with sandy inclusions, dark grey/black surfaces and a flattened, out-turned rim. The rim measures 27.78mm in width, 18.26mm in length, 20.74mm in height, 6.86mm in thickness, and weighs 7.64g. This sherd is possibly from a Thetford ware vessel, although the fabric is slightly unusual despite the form being relatively normal for this type of ware. If it is indeed Thetford ware then it dates to the 10th-11th centuries AD, c.900-1100 AD, although a later date for the s…

Three adjoining potsherds of Early Medieval date. The breaks are due to recent activity, probably the result of ploughing. The pottery has a brown, partly burnished surface and is tempered with fine grits, some mica and occasional larger white flint. When assembled, the sherds show a vessel, probably hand-made, with a wide and curving groove and resulting rib, running horizontally around it. Whilst there is some uncertainty about the date, it seems most likely that these are sherds from an Anglo-Saxon vessel such as a decorated bi-conical urn. Sherds of similar type have been recorded…

A sherd of Early Medieval pottery. The fabric is brownish-black and is tempered with fine grits, a little mica and some sand. The bodysherd is slightly curved, and is decorated with two horizontal grooves, beneath which is part of a small boss and traces of diagonal grooving, suggesting that it comes from an Anglo-Saxon vessel probably a decorated bi-conical urn. The recovery of fragments of molten copper alloy cruciform brooches nearby would support this interpretation. Similar sherds found nearby have been recorded as: SF-277A04;SF-27A4E3;SF-278C41;SF-2766A4;SF-26FE95.The sherd mea…
