A fragment of a Roman Mortaria made from Oxford colour coated ware , dating to the period AD 50- 410. The fragment is broadly triangular in shape and includes part of the foot ring, a low pedestal-like ring formed on the base of a vessel to enable it to stand more securely. The fabric is a sandy orange colour on either side with the original grey colour still clearly visible in the centre of the cross-section. A rim sherd from a mortarium of Roman date. It is wheelmade, formed from a sandy and mixed pink/brown fabric that has small gritty and larger quartz inclusions, possibly an Oxford ware or perhaps a local fabric. The sherd has an elaborate out-turned rim, folded over at the outer edge to give it an oval shaped section. The surfaces have a paler white/pink slip or wash, with larger quartz inclusions visible particularly on the interior surface that range in colour from white to pink.
