A base sherd from a Roman mortarium. It has a dark grey, almost black colour on the outer surface, with a grey brown inner surface, with the core being a sandy light brown colour. The fabric is hard with numerous mica inclusions throughout the sherd. The fragment has small to medium inclusions of quartzite and sand, on what would have been the interior of the mortarium only. Length 47.54, Width 38.5mm, Thickness 7.75mm, Weight 19.4g.

A fragment of a Roman Mortaria made from Oxford colour coated ware , dating to the period AD 50- 410. The fragment is broadly triangular in shape and includes part of the foot ring, a low pedestal-like ring formed on the base of a vessel to enable it to stand more securely. The fabric is a sandy orange colour on either side with the original grey colour still clearly visible in the centre of the cross-section.
