Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) pin. Only the lower end of the pin head suvives. This is crescentic-shaped suggesting that it formed a loop of some sort originally. Below this is a collar c.11mm wide ribbed with multiple transverse grooves and a flattened rectangular shape in cross-section. The stem below this is circular in cross-section and tapers to a blunt tip at its lower end. The surface of the metal is corroded with a reddish-brown patina in places.
Without the upper part of the terminal it is difficult to be certain of the pin's type, bu…

The pin tapers very gently into a rounded foot. Towards the foot are three raised circumferential grooves/cordons.

A complete, but damaged, copper-alloy late medieval to post-medieval composite pin. The head is made from two dished disc-shaped sections of sheet metal soldered together. A simple wire shank, tapering to a point at its lower end, is attached separately to the centre of the lower disc. The head feels heavy given its construction, suggesting that it may be filled with lead. The shank is bent at an angle and there is a small indentation to one side of the head.
