A complete glass early medieval to medieval 'linen smoother' or 'slick-stone'. It is a flattened sub-circular shape with rounded sides. Both faces are convex, but the upper has a deep, irregular, sub-circular depression, c.20mm in diameter, in its centre where the object was separated from the maker's rod during production. The material is often described as 'black' glass, although in actually fact it is a very dark green colour and there is an iridescent patina on the surface. There is some damage and pitting to the surface with flakes missin…

A complete red glass bead, probably of post-medieval to modern date (possibly earlier). It is cylindrical in shape and made from clear translucent glass with a dark red inner core. Just over one half of the mead is missing leaving a rough break across one face. Found in the vacinity of a blue bead (SF-85DBCC) of more convincing antiquity, however, the colour and construction of this example would be very unusual for a bead of Iron Age to early medieval date. Modern glass beads are not uncommon stray finds as they were often used on 19th century lace maker's bodkins and other items.…

An oval nicolo intaglio depicting the Roman god Jupiter, set in a gold-coloured metal frame. It shows Jupiter, partly draped, seated right (as viewed) on a diphros (stool) holding a vertical sceptre in his right hand and a thunderbolt in his extended left hand. There is a groundline beneath the chair. It is cut with a flat top and sides sloping outwards towards the base. The oval metallic frame is flat and surrounds the intaglio at its widest point; behind the frame the intaglio protrudes slightly with straight sides. Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small fragment of glass, possibly window glass. The fragment is roughly triangular in form, pale blue/green in colour, containing some air bubbles and with one surface coarser/rougher than the other. The longest (upper?) edge of the fragment is complete and at one end it begins to curve slightly before terminating in old breaks. It measures 14.65mm in length, 26.13mm in width, 1.56mm in thickness, and 0.91g in weight. This is a possible fragment of window glass or similar. Its find spot might indicate a Roman date, although a later date range cannot be ruled out entirely.

Two fragments of probably late medieval or early post-medieval stained window glass. The glass appears to have been clear originally, but is highly corroded with a flaking surface. The reverse is particularly pitted, which may have occured due to exposure to the elements whilst still positioned in the window frame. Traces of painted geometric decoration can be seen on the inner faces of both fragments. Although this is now a reddish colour, when originally applied it was probably a black vitreous paint that would then have been fired. On the larger fragment this decoration consists of…
