A lead palm guard of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 -1800. The object is a pointed teardrop/oval shape, flat on one side and domed on the other, with a rounded ends. It has a slight D-shaped cross section.  A single small circular recess ( 3.8mm diameter ) is present to the convex surface, the other side is flat and unmarked.  Measurements :- Length: 55.01mm,  Width 45.63mm, Thickness 7.31mm , Weight 95.4g

A lead palm guard of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 -1800. The object is a sub-ovate shape with one long side straighter and more even than the other and with a D-shaped cross section.  A single circular recess ( 10.3mm diameter ) is present to one surface, which has been worn through by wear and is now a hole . The metal is a dark grey colour, and both surfaces have the appearance of a series of ripples on them.  Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast in oyster shells as evidenced in Portable Antiquities Scheme record number IOW-A9A877 i…

A small sized cast lead palm guard of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 -1800. The palm guard is sub ovate with a slight D-shaped cross section and worn edges. A single shallow circular recess ( 6.5mm diameter ) is present to one surface. The metal is a very pale grey, almost white colour.  Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast in oyster shells as evidenced in Portable Antiquities Scheme record number IOW-A9A877 in which the shell remains. Measurements :- Diameter: 39.22mm, Thickness 2.73mm , Weight 28.9g

The upper face has a circular depression (15.mm in diameter) stamped into it, to take the points of needles. The guard would have been wrapped in leather or cloth, with a hole to line up with the circular depression in the guard, and then strapped to the hand to protect the palm when forcing needles through very coarse material. A lead disc measuring 40.61mm in diameter and approx 3.3mm in thickness. A complete cast lead capstan or 'bobbin' shot dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1600-1800). The object is broadly hour-glass shaped, with a flattened top and bottom and a waisted cylindrical middle section. The patina is a patchy white and grey colour and the surface shows signs of wear and damage. These elongated forms of shot were designed to provide increased power.
