County: Suffolk

Probably miscast fragment of a possible Late Roman copper alloy buckle frame (25 x 15mm, 2mm thick. Weighs 2.62g), broad flat-sectioned fragment of the possible shoulder of a frame with a horses head in profile projecting from the outside edge. Parts of the possible breaks are smooth. An engraved line defines the division of neck and mane on one face. See Hawkes and Dunning (1963). c. AD 250-409.

Medieval copper-alloy spur buckle with integral plate. It tapers in width from the outside edge of the frame to the opposite tip of the plate. The frame is D-shaped (flat outside edge) and almost plano-convex in cross-section (more or less flat internally). There is a very short, rectangular-cross-sectioned element projecting outward, not centrally, from the outside edge. On the plate, just beyond the inside edge of the frame, there is a sub-circular element, which is convex at the sides and concave on the reverse. It is perforated and currently has a short piece of iron protrudi…

Incomplete and slightly distorted medieval copper-alloy buckle frame with an expanded outside edge and a central constriction for a missing sheet-metal roller. Similar to Egan and Pritchard (2002), No. 317. The outside edge, including the constriction, is sub-oval in cross-section: flat on the reverse and convex on the external edge and front face. The narrower shoulders of the frame commence parallel to and inward of the non-constricted ends of the outside edge. A short straight groove divides and distinguishes these at each end and on both faces. One of the shoulders extends o…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete long and narrow medieval object, possibly part of a buckle pin, with an animal-head terminal at one end and a worn break at the other. It is generally rectangular in cross-section, but bevelled on both sides of the front face for most of its length. The front is one of the broader faces and the only one that bears surface decoration. Viewed from the front or rear, the long edges are straight and parallel, and the non-broken (zoomorphic) end may have been relatively straight and perpendicular but is now rounded. Viewed from the side, the long edges are curved and nearly…

Fragment of copper alloy Medieval composite buckle frame with integral forked spacer. Oval frame with obtuse angled outside edge forming a shallow medial point. The back of the loop extends to form the beginnings of the forked spacer but is broken symmetrically after 7mm, probably where the slot began to widen. The pin is missing. Both extant faces of the spacer arms show evidence of where the missing soldered outer plates would have originally been attached. The buckle frame has a D-shaped cross-section with flat rectangular section spacer arms. Dark brown patina. Circa AD1350-1450.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of the front part of medieval buckle plate, consisting of a single copper-alloy sheet retaining two dome-headed rivets in situ. It is likely to have originally been rectangular or sub-rectangular but is now an irregular shape due to breaks on all edges that are not recent. There are two projections on one side that would have folded around the bar of the frame but the folded part has broken away. Between these is a slot for the pin, and on the top and bottom are recesses for the frame. The rivets are arranged transversally: one at the top and one at the bottom. The plate…
