Iron Age Irstead quarter stater (plated)   Description: the coin has a base metal core with gold surfaces. It weighs 0.65 grammes, and has axes of 10.6 and 9.9 millimetres. A description of the obverse and reverse is difficult because much of the gold surface of the coin is no longer present. But it is clear the obverse has a rectangular form divided into squares flanked on one side by a pellet-in-ring. North Thames (Catuvellauni/Trinovantes) or Kent (Cantii). Copper alloy unit, possibly of Addedomaros. Philip de Jersey notes that it is unlisted in any of the major catalogues although this brings the total known to six. The obverse on this example reveals for the first time the wreath around the boar; this has intriguing parallels on Kentish coinage, but is not something usually associated with the North Thames.
