Description:  At face value, this is an unofficial copy of a gold Merovingian tremissis of a type originally minted in Dorestad between c.630 and c.650 by a moneyer named Madelinus. The obverse displays a right-facing bust with the legend RESTΛTFIT. The reverse is a stylised cross on steps, with a base and two rows of three pellets beneath. A complete gold early medieval early medieval shilling (uncertain type) of uncertain anonymous ruler, dating to the period AD 580-675. Mint and moneyer unknown. The obverse die is the same as another found in the parish of Coddenham in 2003 (EMC 2003.0219). Newman and Blackburn (BNJ 004, Coin Register 2003, no. 62) argued that this is probably an East Anglian coinage.
