An Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver sceat (proto-penny), dating to AD 680-710. Obverse depicting diademed head right in serpent circle; obverse legend illegible. The reverse has a serpent circle (starting at 7 'o clock) enclosing a bird facing right on latin cross with an annulet at the end of both short arms of the cross; a probably greek cross in the left field before the bird; reverse legend reads [...]VAA three annulets (unbarred A). An Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) silver sceat (proto-penny), dating to AD 680-710. Obverse depicting diademed head right in serpent circle; reverse type has a serpent circle (starting at 7 'o clock) enclosing a bird facing right on latin cross with an annulet at the end of both short arms of the cross; a greek cross in the left field before the bird. Probably East Anglia mint. The coin has a pale gold appearence. It has been probably clipped; the edges are flattened and there are no traces of the legends. Cf. Abramson ( 1994, p. 66, no. A silver sceatta of Abramsson's series Z, type 66, dating c. 680-720 AD. This is a relatively rare type of sceatta, with few others recorded on the PAS database. This exact variant is apparently published by Abramsson, with all those he illustrates lacking the cross above the reverse animal. C.f Abramsson pp. 45-46, refs. Z100 and Z200.This coin has been recorded on the EMC as 2018.0205
