Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Description: A silver Roman denarius that has been incorporated into a finger ring as the bezel. The hoop is rectangular in cross-section, flaring at the shoulders with a longitudinal groove along the centre of the outer face of each shoulder. The outer end of each shoulder has been soldered to the reverse of the denarius. The whole object including the coin then appears to have been coated with white metal. A recessed rectangular panel is visible to one side of the inner face of the rear of the hoop and possible lettering can be seen here, but this is almost entirely covered by a fold…

Unidentified copper-alloy object of unknown age. It is sub-circular, of fairly uniform thickness and slightly dished. It appears to be complete as there is no evidence of breaks. Close to one side there is a perfectly circular area, approximately one third of the total, which is flat. Beyond this it curves concavo-convexly in all directions all the way to the edge.
On the generally convex face, the flat circle is covered with multiple very fine concentric and perfectly circular grooves and ridges. The outermost ridge is wider and expanded at one point to form a wide and short triangle…

Head and neck of an animal figurine, apparently a dog, of unknown date. It is made of lead and may be a model for a finished version in a more durable material. It begins with a worn transverse break across the neck, which is oval (near circular) in cross-section. It soon expands in thickness and nearly twice as much in width to form the head. The head is long and sleek, with prominent cheekbones and triangular outward- and rearward-pointing ears. The top of the cranium is vaguely lozenge-shaped and the eyes are suggested by hollows between the forward end of this and the cheekbones. T…

An incomplete copper-alloy mount of uncertain Roman to medieval date. An elongated sub-rectangular strip of slightly asymeterical shape, no bent into an irregular C-shape. The outer face is undecorated and has a slight lip along one edge. The inner face is decorated with two wide, shallow, parallel, longitudinal grooves running along the centre, each featuring a line of incised ring-and-dot motifs placed alternately with one another. “Tally stone”, marked on a water worn pebble of mid-grey slightly banded, fine grained siltstone, in good sunlight, very, very fine specks of mica are visible within the stone. The twenty tallies are cut in to the lateral edge on the straighter of the two sides, they are a V cut with either a file (or similar) or cut with a sharp blade, the edges of which have rounded off slightly over the years and they appear to be a non-recent addition to the surface of the stone. The uppermost incision is 2.31 mm apart (measured from the deepest part of the cut to the next dee…
