Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy casting well or jet of uncertain date. This well or jet is evidence of casting, being a waste fragment from the process of casting an item made of copper-alloy. The date is uncertain but could range from the Bronze Age to Post Medieval periods. The well is sub-triangular in plan and is 20.6mm long, 19.2mm wide and 14.8mm tall. 6.54g. The top is slightly concave. The lower side is domed, an oval convex, that has a central projection, the runner into the mould. This projection has a rectangular cross-section, and is about 9mm long. The upper surface of the well has a c…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy probable pin of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Modern. It is a slender rod of copper alloy, circular in cross-section and broken at the pointed end. The head end has a slight projecting collar 14mm from the end, and then tapers with faceted (hammered?) sides to the end which has a slightly wider disc or thickened end. It seems likely that the pin once had a separate decorative head of a disserent material, which threaded onto the faceted tapering area, held in place by the two thickened areas, perhaps a glass bead or hollow metal head. The thickened end of the hea…

Object type: STRAINER
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy strainer or skimmer of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1250 - 1700). The strainer is formed of a disc of copper-alloy sheet metal which has been perforated by hand from the reverse using a variety of different shaped puches for the holes. The perforations are irregularly positioned and vary in size. The sides of the sheet are curved backwards, but there is no evidence of attachment. The disc is 87.6mm diameter, 14mm thick (sheet metal 0.6mm thick) and weighs 48.8g. Similar examples are known from the medieval period onwards, such as Egan (1998, 158) fig. 127, w…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast, copper alloy unidentified object. It is in the shape of an isosceles triangle in plan and is D shaped in section. At the wide end, it suddenly becomes thicker. The wide end is also an old break. The point is somewhat rounded, and the edges are not particularly straight, nor the faces flat. It is 36.5mm long, 15mm wide and 6.7mm thick. It weighs 8.5gm. Although having a superficial similarity to the tip of a spear, the roundedness of the edges and the sudden thickening does not make this possible. It could also be the end of a larger object such as a scabbard chape, with the ho…

Broad period: UNKNOWN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper, or perhaps a retouched flake, of uncertain date, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age, 4000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of translucent dark brown flint. It is D shaped in plan with removal scars covering the dorsal face. All the edges have short, stepped, abrupt retouch. The flint seems thin for a scraper, but the abrupt retouch rules out a shaper implement such as an arrowhead or cutting tool. The flint is 19.9mm long, 16.4mm wide and 4.6mm thick. 1.3g.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A secondary flint flake which is nearly heart shaped in plan. It is 32.7mm long, 24.2mm wide and 8.2mm thick. The dorsal face is partially cortical. On the left ventral side is a removal facet with evidence of platform preparation. The flint is brownish grey. The flake is not retouched. It is not possible to suggest a specific date for this flake. The flint is damaged which may be the result of water action since it was found near the sea.
