Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy Roman rear hook Colchester derivative brooch. The head is incomplete, only part of one wing surviving. This surviving section is decorated with a wide transverse flute. The reverse of the head is concave and the remains of a rear-facing hook projects from the centre of its upper edge. The bow is a flattened D-shape in cross-section, curved in profile and tapering towards a rounded break at its lower end. The outer face of the bow is decorated with two widely spaced, parallel, longitudinal ribs running down the centre. The lower bow, foot and catch-plate are …

A complete copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The main body of the object is ring-shaped with rounded outer edges and a hole c.10.5mm in diameter through the centre. One face is decorated with two concentric rings of small incised triangles, some possibly containing traces of enamel of uncertain colour. Projecting from one side is a small bluntly pointed knop, its outer face decorated with a notch running inwards from each side creating a zoomorphic appearance. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy unknown object of an uncertain date. Its upper portion is rectangular in plan and circular in section 8.63mm in diameter beginning from an ancient break. Emerging from the upper portion is a collar with four elements. The first is a panel projecting from the upper portion terminating in a circumferential groove. The second element is bulbous, 17.22mm in diameter. From its narrow base is rounded panel 10.45mm in diameter. Emerging from this panel is a long shaft 76.61mm in length which tapers into a now blunted point. The object appears to be a pin…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified copper-alloy fragment of uncertain date. The object is a flattened sub-triangular shape with breaks around all sides. The outer face is smoothly finished with two curved raised ridges running parallel to one another to one side. The reverse is rough and unfinished. The fragment appears to be part of a larger hollow object of irregular shape, possibly even a figurine. Without further diagnostic details only a broad Roman to post-medieval date range can be suggested, however. Length: 27.14mm, width: 20.51mm, thickness: 6.90mm, weight: 14.67g

A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The object is formed from a sheet of lead rolled into a narrow tube leaving a seam down one side and a narrow hole through the centre. Objects such as these were in use for a long period and as such are difficult to date closely without a secure archaeological context. Length: 33.97mm, width: 12.11mm, thickness: 9.50mm, weight: 16.71g

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL

An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (

Incomplete unidentified copper-alloy object of unknown date. It is long, narrow and broadly rectangular, although it tapers in width very gradually and very slightly from one end to the other. It is rectangular in cross-section. It has a gentle curve which can be observed when viewing either of the narrow faces and which becomes more pronounced towards the narrower end. It is unclear whether there is a break at this end but if so it is not recent. The broad end certainly terminates in a break. There is a concavity here which suggests the break occurred across a circular or round…
