“Tally stone”, marked on a water worn pebble of mid-grey slightly banded, fine grained siltstone, in good sunlight, very, very fine specks of mica are visible within the stone. The twenty tallies are cut in to the lateral edge on the straighter of the two sides, they are a V cut with either a file (or similar) or cut with a sharp blade, the edges of which have rounded off slightly over the years and they appear to be a non-recent addition to the surface of the stone. The uppermost incision is 2.31 mm apart (measured from the deepest part of the cut to the next dee…

A complete limestone rotary millstone of unknown date. It is circular in shape with a small circular 'eye' in the centre. The griding surface is dressed with fine parallel grooves arranged in groups ('harps') radiating out from the centre at slightly different angles to enhance the griding process. There is a small amount of damage to the outer edges of both faces.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete fragment of worked stone of uncertain date. Approximately one third of an originally circular stone survives, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The stone is extremely hard, pale yellow to white in colour, and slightly pink along one of the old breaks, perhaps as a result of post-usage exposure to heat or fire. Both faces are extremely smooth and have central indentations. It appears plausible that these smooth indentations are a product of use-wear, although for precisely what or when remains unclear. The surviving fragment measures 102.24mm in length, 46.75mm…

An incomplete and worn stone object, probably a whetstone or hone of uncertain date. It is formed from a very finely grained dark grey to black stone, and is square in section and rectangular in form. All surfaces show signs of extensive wear and corrosion, resulting in all corners being rounded and the surfaces slightly concave in places. Towards the old breaks there is what appears to be a single band or constriction running around the object. The entire object measures 31.54mm in length, 12.92mm in width, 11.30mm in thickness, and 9.18g in weight. This is probably a very worn st…

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk

A fragment from a grey volcanic lava stone quern of uncertain date. Only part of one face survives, the remainder of the object is missing due to old breaks, now worn. The remains are sub-rectangular in form with a grinding face that has multiple parallel grooves. All edges terminate in old breaks. This quern measures 135.99mm in length, 128.90mm in width, 24.05mm in thickness, 602g in weight. The grooves on the quern are very large, perhaps suggesting it is a fragment from a Medieval millstone.

A bi-conical stone bead of uncertain date. It has a central circular aperture. This bead measures 16.25mm in diameter, 20.55mm in height, 7.02g in weight. There is a similar example recorded on the PAS database (KENT-3704E3). Dr Kevin Leahy writes: it is likely that this find represent a fossil sponge known as 'porosphaera' which, although used as beads during some periods of the past, are natural in origin.

An incomplete pendant whetstone of uncertain date. It is formed from a medium to dark grey fine grained and micaceous stone, perhaps a micaceous schist, and is square in section, rectangular in form, terminating in old breaks at one end. The surviving end is triangular in profile with a worn hourglass perforation, an attempted second circular perforation visible on one side of the complete end.
