Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large fragment of Medieval painted window glass. It is roughly circular in form and has figural decoration depicting a face, probably of an angel or perhaps a saint. The glass is clear with many small air pockets and a slightly rough texture particularly on the back face and probably as a result of the method of manufacture. At the top of the sherd there is a short and smooth complete rounded edge, the curved form of the edges to either side deliberately worked to give the fragment its shape. The lower edges of the glass terminate in old breaks. The fragment measures 108.67mm in wid…

Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two fragments of probably late medieval or early post-medieval stained window glass. The glass appears to have been clear originally, but is highly corroded with a flaking surface. The reverse is particularly pitted, which may have occured due to exposure to the elements whilst still positioned in the window frame. Traces of painted geometric decoration can be seen on the inner faces of both fragments. Although this is now a reddish colour, when originally applied it was probably a black vitreous paint that would then have been fired. On the larger fragment this decoration consists of…

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete whetstone or hone with a copper-alloy suspension loop attached, most likely to be of medieval date. The stone itself is grey in colour with fine micaeous inclusions, it is rectangular in shape and flaring in width towards its terminal, it is now fragmentary due to breaks, all surviving surfaces have grooves and striations on them, persumably created through use. The complete end of the hone has a complete suspension loop attached to it, this consists of a piece of copper-alloy which has rectangular terminal ends and a narrower rectangular loop in its centre. Each rect…

A circular hole pierces through the hone at 12.51mm from the wider terminal. With the hole uppermost, the left side of the hone is worn, where it has been used for sharpening a blade. It weighs 13.25g. Medieval honestone of Norwegian Ragstone. The cross-section is sub-rectangular with the narrow sides quite flat but the two broad faces irregularly convex. Close to the slightly damaged narrower end an encircling V-sectioned groove with overlapping ends was presumably to take a suspension cord (a drilled perforation is the more normal method). Below the groove the sides are straight and then gently diverge before a rounded lower end. Length 84mm. Width 21.5 - 28mm. Thickness 10.5 - 14.5mm. Weight 55.98g. Norwegian Ragstone was imported in quantity before the Conquest (Moore, D.T. and …

The 'holder' is a forked spindle-holder, designed to hold the roulette whilst allowing it to spin. The spindle is missing. The 'holder' is cast in one, composed of two arms which meet at a solid head with terminal knop, defined by a …
