A copper-alloy biface weight of Post-Medieval date. It comprises a sub-square sheet of copper alloy that is rectangular in section and has extensive tool marks on all surfaces giving a slightly faceted appearance to the edges. Both faces carry the same decoration consisting of four punched annulets with a stamped lion mark beneath. The weight measures 16.23mm in length, 14.77mm in width, 3.43mm in thickness, and weighs 5.90g (91 grains). The presence of four annulets and a lion on both surfaces indicates that this was a four pennyweight bullion weight of 18th century or later date,…

A cast lead weight of uncertain date. It is relatively crudely cast, circular in plan and hemispherical in section with a slight lip on the bottom edge. The upper surface is coarse and uneven with a raised moulded cross that extends to the edges of the weight and has at its centre a quatrefoil with squared edges. The back face of the weight is undecorated and slightly concave in shape with a riased lip or rim around the exterior edge. It appears as though the molten lead was poured into a mould and allowed to cool or harden, hence the uneven finish on the exterior surface, the relative…

A complete lead standing weight of Medieval date. It is conical in shape with a hexagonally faceted surface and flat base. The weight tapers towards the top where it is flattened to create an integral suspension loop that is semi-circular in profile with a central circular perforation. The top of the loop has a small U-shaped notch. The weight measures 30.35mm in height, 16.44mm in diameter at the base, and weighs 38.63g. This weight belongs to a class of lead weight termed 'standing weights' that according to Biggs appear in the 12th or 13th centuries BC, with the integral suspens…

Two perforated lead weights, both with flat bases: a) conical weight with truncated upper terminal and irregular-shaped base. It has an hexagonal-shaped perforation, base 24.6mm x 23.33mm, height 19.1mm, weight 34.24g. b) plano-convex shape with approximately circular base and roughly square-shaped perforation, base 23.72mm x 21.95mm, height 2.42mm, weight 33.49g. Weights such as these could have been used for spindle whorls (b) or fishing weights. They most likely date to medieval to Post-medieval periods.

A cast lead weight of possible Early-Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is rectangular in plan, trapezoidal in section and with faceted exterior edges. Both front and back faces appear to be undecorated, however the preservation of the weight means that any decoration which may have once existed is no-longer visible. It measures 16.84mm in length, 12.88mm in width, 3.54mm in thickness, and weighs 5.99g. The lack of defined decorative motifs renders the dating of this object uncertain, although associated finds might indicate a date range from any period between the Roman and Post-Medie…

A lead apothecary's weight, Late Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is square (18.83 x 19.38mm) and c.2mm thick and weighs 5.76g. There is a circular stamp 16.3mm in diameter filling one side, with a long heart shape, bisected longitudinally, and the initials S and I to either side, and T above. Biggs (1992, p.7) notes that London apothecaries belonged to the Grocers Company at this time, which played a major part in the standardisation of trade weights.
