An incomplete pendant whetstone of uncertain date. It is formed from a medium to dark grey fine grained and micaceous stone, perhaps a micaceous schist, and is square in section, rectangular in form, terminating in old breaks at one end. The surviving end is triangular in profile with a worn hourglass perforation, an attempted second circular perforation visible on one side of the complete end. The entire object measures 50.43mm in length, 10.98mm in width, 11.81mm in thickness and 13.24g in weight. This is an incomplete pendant whetstone of uncertain date, possibly dating to the Earl…

An incomplete worked stone object, probably a whetstone, hone or similar object of uncertain date. It is formed from a relatively hard pale white/brown stone that has sparse very small quartz-like inclusions. the entire object is rectangular in form, square in section and missing part of one side due to old breaks. The surfaces have extensive wear resulting in smooth edges and corners and there are traces of possible tool marks in places indicative of deliberate manufacture. It measures 62.13mm in length, 23.42mm in width, 23.76mm in thickness and 55.44g in weight. This appears to be …

An incomplete and worn stone object, probably a whetstone or hone of uncertain date. It is formed from a very finely grained dark grey to black stone, and is square in section and rectangular in form. All surfaces show signs of extensive wear and corrosion, resulting in all corners being rounded and the surfaces slightly concave in places. Towards the old breaks there is what appears to be a single band or constriction running around the object. The entire object measures 31.54mm in length, 12.92mm in width, 11.30mm in thickness, and 9.18g in weight. This is probably a very worn st…

Medieval honestone of Norwegian Ragstone. The cross-section is sub-rectangular with the narrow sides quite flat but the two broad faces irregularly convex. Close to the slightly damaged narrower end an encircling V-sectioned groove with overlapping ends was presumably to take a suspension cord (a drilled perforation is the more normal method). Below the groove the sides are straight and then gently diverge before a rounded lower end. Length 84mm. Width 21.5 - 28mm. Thickness 10.5 - 14.5mm. Weight 55.98g. Norwegian Ragstone was imported in quantity before the Conquest (Moore, D.T. and …

two copper alloy objects forming a roulette wheel and holder. The roulette is a flat, annular shape, 3.2mm in width, supported by three arms of equal length which meet in a triangle in the centre, in which there is a rivet hole. The edge of the roulette wheel is patterned with a running zig-zag, and is 1.74mm in thickness. The roulette wheel weighs 5.99g. The 'holder' is a forked spindle-holder, designed to hold the roulette whilst allowing it to spin. The spindle is missing. The 'holder' is cast in one, composed of two arms which meet at a solid head with terminal knop, defined by a …

Standing lead weight with flattened perforated top. The base is circular, 14 mm in diameter, and has a central depression 5 mm in diameter and 18.5 mm deep. The weight is cylindrical for about half its length, and then tapers and flattens to 8 x 4 mm. Here it has a 3 mm diameter circular perforation. Although this weight could have been hung from a steelyard (giving a variable weight) it could also have been used on its own; it wouldn't have been in a trader's interest to use it, though, as even today it is just over weight at 29.29g (1.01 oz).

Lead object, probably a weight. It is roughly circular and plano-convex, and looks very like a spindle whorl except that it is unperforated. There is a 5 mm deep circular dimple (diameter 4 mm) in the centre of the flat base. The base measures 23 x 20 mm and the weight is 10 mm tall. It weighs 25.46g (0.85 oz).

Irregular lead weight, a rough truncated cone in shape, which has a U-shaped iron loop in the middle of the larger face. It weighs 39.26g. Weights with iron or copper-alloy loops may be Roman; biconical ones certainly are, but these more irregular shapes could possibly be of other dates too.

Thick lead disc with raised border on either face. On one face the border has at least three and perhaps four transverse grooves, deep ones at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and a shallow one at 3 o'clock; there may be a very shallow and broad one at 9 o'clock. Possibly a trade weight, although at 59.48g (2.05 oz) it seems unlikely as it is overweight for 2 oz. Undatable.

Unusual lead trade weight. Although it is circular and stamped on one face with a crown, the reverse has some unusual features. The circle is 23 mm in diameter and 6 mm thick with a bevelled edge on the reverse. In the middle of the reverse is a short projecting lug with a burred-over end; one edge of this burred-over end projects out to the edge of the circle. The crown on the front is, I think, of the medieval type with a band around the head, a high central ornament and two lower side ornaments, but it is tall and thin and the details are blurred. The weight weighs 26.4g, which…

Lead weight, a tall neatly made cone in a very white lead which has ?recent, perhaps agricultural, damage to one side. 22 mm tall, the base is squarish with rounded corners and probably 14 mm square (the damage makes this uncertain). In the centre of the base is a 2 mm diameter hole which runs 7 mm into the body of the weight before ending. Weighs 22.93g (0.81 oz).

Conical lead weight, 14 mm tall and 12 mm in diameter. The cone rises off-centre from the base with one side at a steeper angle than the other. In the centre of the base is some iron corrosion, which suggests that there may once have been an iron suspension loop here, but a magnet is not attracted to it. Weighs 8.84g (0.31 oz).
