A copper alloy object. It has a shank of rounded profile, 2.25mm thick and 13mm in length. One terminal may be incomplete due to an old break. The opposite terminal flares into a semi-circular shape, 16.47mm wide and domed with a hollow back. The edges show more signs of wear than the domed area. There is further wear on the reverse along the edges, and within the central hollowed area are traces of a dull yellow-coloured coating. The object measures 26.19mm in surviving length and weighs 3.13g. It is possible that the object represents a terminal perhaps from a handle, or may have b…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object of uncertain form or date. It consists of a crescent shaped plate with flat back and moulded front face. This is narrow at one end and expands horizontally as the curve develops, terminating in old breaks at both ends. At the narrow end there is an additional band of moulded decoration attached to the outer edge of the object. This traces the outline of the edge of the plate and also terminates at both ends in old breaks. The additional band of decoration is separated from the main plate by a moulded groove visible on the front face only, and is d…

A cast lead spindle whorl of Roman or later date. It is biconvex in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces and has an off-centred circular perforation. There are no signs of decoration. It measures 23.76mm in diameter, 7.67mm in height/thickness, and weighs 21.42g. This weight may date as early as the Roman period but is perhaps more likely to be Medieval or later in date.

A lead weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is conical in form with a flat base and dome-shaped front face. The object is pierced through the centre by an oval shaped perforation. It measures 16.25mm in length, 13.74mm in width, 8.77mm in height/thickness, and weighs 9.07g. This is probably a simple lead spindle whorl but is of uncertain Roman or later date.

A possible lead weight of uncertain date. It is square in shape and rectangular in section and on one large face (front?) has a central circular hole that does not pierce the entire object. It measures 14.92mm in length, 14.78mm in width, 10.21mm in thickness, and weighs 19.91g. This is probably a simple square weight of uncertain date. The small circular hole might potentially represent a weight or amount, but might also possibly suggest usage as a counter or gaming piece of some kind.

A cast copper-alloy bead of Bronze Age or later date. It is biconical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces and a central circular perforation. The surfaces have a dark brown patina that has been chipped in places due to post-depositional damage. The bead measures 13.78mm in diameter, 5.01mm in internal diameter, 6.64mm in thickness, and weighs 4.23g. This bead could be of any date from the Bronze Age period onwards, although the patina perhaps suggests an earlier rather than later dating.

A lead weight of uncertain Roman or later date. It is square in shape and section with a single central circular perforation. The two faces that are perforated have slightly raised edges with folded corners, possibly deliberately although perhaps as a result of use wear or post-depotisional damage. The object measures 15.09mm in length, 14.99mm in width, 13.60mm in thickness, and weighs 21.14g. The central perforation on this object suggests a possible usage as a weight, however a different usage as a token, gaming counter, or similar item cannot immediately be ruled out. This obje…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object of uncertain form or date. It comprises an incomplete cylindrical bar that terminates at one end in old breaks and at the other has an integrally cast conical shaped terminal. The terminal itself has a slightly dome-shaped face with a circular incision at its centre. On the sides of the terminal as it narrows to the bar there are a series of circumferential ridges, which may be the result of the production process or deliberate decorative elements. The entire object is worn, pitted in places and has a dark green/grey patina. It measures 74.50mm in…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An iron object, probably a bolt or screw, of uncertain date. It has a square head and tapering rectangular shaft that is square in section. Approximately half way down the shaft expands on one side, but this may be the result of corrosion or encrustation. Towards the base of the shaft there is a large square projection that in form resembles a rove or bolt through which the shaft passes. The entire object has suffered from extensive corrosion and encrustation to the degree that the surfaces are extremely fragile and the form is not entirely apparent. It measures 73.27mm in length, 13.2…

An incomplete iron object, possibly a bridle fitting or similar, of uncertain date. It comprises a central bar that is square in section and rectangular in form. At each end are the remains of projecting loops, one of which is complete and is formed by the end of the bar being elongated and curved around to meet the main shaft, thus forming the loop. The loop at the opposite end is formed in a similar manner but is incomplete due to old breaks. It is also set at ninety degrees to the plane of the opposite loop. The entire object is heavily encrusted and corroded. It measures 102.93mm …

From the complete end extends an integrally cast and elongated cylindrical terminal that tapers to a point and has been bent to an angle of 90 degrees just past the point where terminal and plate join, perhaps as a result of post-depositional damage. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete iron object, possibly a very corroded fragment from a whittle and tang knife of uncertain date. It is flat, tapering towards one end to produce a triangular form. At the widest end of the triangle there appears to be a terminal end separated from the main plate by semi-circular notches to either side of the object, from which extends the heavily corroded terminal, perhaps formed from two prongs although this remains uncertain due to damage to the object. It measures 94.88mm in total length, 13.97mm in width/height, 3.27mm in thickness, and weighs 8.31g. This is probably a…

Object type: AGRICULTURE AND SUBSISTENCE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small iron object of uncertain form, probably agricultural in nature, and highly corroded and encrusted. It is circular in section with two prongs forming a U-shaped plan, with a further short prong extending backwards from one end. The precise form and function of the original object are uncertain due to the poor preservation of the object and the extensive encrustation covering all surfaces. The fragment measures 31.73mm in length, 34.24mm in width, 9.81mm in thickness, and weighs 18.48g. This object is probably agricultural in nature but is of uncertain Roman or later date.

A standing lead weight of unknown date. It is a cone shape with faceted sides rising from a polygonal base 16.11mm in diameter, to a length of 24.84mm. The apex is shaped to a rectangle, 10.29mm x 6.62mm, and is perforated with a neat circular hole. The weight weighs 30.2g. Biggs describes similar weights as probably dating to the medieval period, but the neatness and finishing of this example suggests a more recent date.
