A complete Earl Medieval to Medieval lead-alloy stylus dating dating to circa AD 1000-1100. Now bent out of shape to the point that it has folded back on itself, the piece is circular-sectioned. The terminal has a flat end whilst the nib end is pointed. it shares similarities with Biddle's class I writing lead, with more similarities to example 2290, dating to 10th century (Biddle, 1990: p.742-743, fig 211, 2290.)

A complete Medieval lead-alloy stylus dating to circa AD 1200-1400. It is circular-sectioned. The nib end is spatulate. It has a creamy patina and is undecorated.  Martin Biddle in 'Artefacts from medieval Winchester: object and economy in medieval Winchester' (C.U.P. 1990), records similar items on pages 735-8 and 741-6, as class II, and dates them to the 13th - 14th century.

A complete, but bent, medieval to post-medieval lead stylus. Is is sub-circular in cross-section with one blunt end and one pointed, functional end. It has been bent into a C-shaped and the surface of the metal has a whitish-grey corroded patina. Biddle (1990, 735-8 and 741-6) records similar items as his Class II, which he dates to the 13th - 14th centuries. It shares particular similarities with his fig.2313 (ibid., 745), which he dates to the 13th century. However, Styli like these were used from the Medieval to Post-Medieval period and so are difficult to date precisely

A complete lead stylus or ‘writing lead’ (Biddle (1990, 735-738)), 86mm in length, with a round cross section of 6.5mm diameter. One end tapers to a point, the other has a large and unusually well made rectangular eraser terminal, 17mm in length, 9.6mm wide and 4.5mm thick. This has a bevelled chisel tip and is decorated with an incised saltire on both broad faces.

A copper-alloy fragment of Roman to Early Medieval stylus, dating to AD 43-800. It consists of an oval cross-sectioned shaft, which tapers towards a blunt tip. The surfaces are pitted and affected by corrosion. The break at the upper edge is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stylus. The stylus was used in the Roman world, was re-introduced in the 7th century, and continued in use until at least the 12th century. It is not always easy to distinguish Roman, Early Medieval and Medieval styli, especially when they are as fragmentary as this one. Length: 47.61 mm

An incomplete copper-alloy probably Early Medieval stylus, dating to AD 700-900 It consists of a sub-rectangular cross-sectioned shaft, which has a flaring eraser at one end; the shaft breaks at the opposite end after 28.88 mm. At the base of the eraser the shaft bends slightly sideways and might have had a moulded collar. The eraser's faces have traces of iron corrosion products. Cf with LIN-F2F045. Length:52.80 mm Width of the eraser: 17.73 mm Thickness of the eraser: 3.29 mm Width of the shaft: 4.66 mm Thickness of the shaft: 3.22 mm Weight: 5.69 g.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, perhaps the eraser from an early-medieval stylus. The surviving fragment is triangular, flattening as it flares with straight edges towards the widest edge, which is incomplete due to old breaks. At the narrower end is a raised collar giving the object an oval cross-section, raised on both front and reverse. Above this, the object terminates in old breaks. It has a dark green/brown patina that is worn in places, has some pitting and evidence of post-depositional corrosion. The entire fragment measures 27.17mm in length, 29.35mm in width, 6.86…

A copper alloy stylus, probably of Early Medieval date. The metal is worn and patinated, obscuring any decoration, although there are traces of bands of grooved lines on the shaft. The stylus has a flat terminal ( or eraser) which is triangular in shape, and its shaft is circular in section, terminating in a point. The shaft is bent and the lower section and terminal have been bent at right angles, forming a square hook shape. The stylus measures 85.35mm in length (bent), and the shaft is 3.8mm in diameter. The straight edge of the flat terminal measures 12.41mm in length, and the sty…

A cast lead object, possibly a stylus, of probable Post-Medieval or later date. It is rectangular in form, square in section and tapers to a sharpened point. The entire object has been slightly bent at the centre due to post-depositional damage and has a seam running the length of one side suggesting it was folded and then hammered into shape. In its current form the object measures 83.19mm in length (bent), 7.49mm in width, 6.12mm in thickness, and weighs 30.88g. This is possibly a simple lead stylus, although other functions cannot be ruled out entirely. It is likely to be Post-Medi…

A Medieval to Post-Medieval probable stylus, or writing lead. The object is complete and triangular in shape. One terminal comes to a point, and the shaft is circular becoming oval in section as it broadens toward the upper terminal. This is flattened, 4.5mm in thickness and angled at the centre above a circular perforation which us surrounded by a narrow collar. The stylus measures 35.6mm in length, 11.82mm in width and varies in thickness between 2.75mm at the pointed end to 7mm at the upper end just below the perforation. It weighs 11.7g. An eighteenth-nineteenth century date…

A lead stylus of Roman or later date. It has an oval shaped head with oval indentation on the upper surface. Beneath the head is a crudely incised neck before the stylus expands to a cylindrical body that tapers to a sharpened point. Just beneath the neck there are a series of unevenly incised transverse grooves. This object measures 42.54mm in length, 7.93mm in width, 9.15mm in thickness, and weighs 13.04g. Styli such as this had a long period of usage spanning the Roman through Modern periods. A close parallel has not been identified for the current example and it may the…

A lead probable stylus for writing on slate with tapering terminal ends. This stylus is bent in its centre and has signs of recent possibly agricultural damage, it has a roughly circular cross-section and measures c82mm in length, if straightened, and 8mm in width. A similar lead stylus is illustrated in Detector Finds (Gordon Bailey, 1995, p52-53, no 5), he states that these are difficult to date but are often associated with post medieval sites which date pre-1700.

Tanged Ae stylus with an eraser gently flaring out from the shaft, the approximate end of the eraser indicated by three shallow incised transverse grooves ?scoured or cut into the metal. Slight surface corrosion and pitting, together with stress cracking where bent, make it difficult to trace some of the grooves, but esentially they are grouped into (an average) three grooves and used in more or less equally-spaced bundles along the entire length of the stylus shaft. Towards the point some of these grooves are very ephemeral indeed and are at a slight angle. The point is pitted obsc…

Copper alloy stylus, damaged at the eraser end and very corroded. The shaft appears to be circular in section, tapering slightly towards the eraser; however there are traces of facets suggesting that it might have been octagonal in section. The point, which is 21mm long, is sharply differentiated from the shaft. The eraser end is less sharply defined and consists of a gently broadening flattened area, surviving 16mm long and up to 5.5mm wide. Stylii occur in both Roman and Anglo-Saxon contexts; although Roman examples are commonly iron the shape, particularly of the point, is more like…

A copper-alloy fitting most likely to be from a stylus-like implement. The terminal is in the shape of a Romanesque dragon, 78mm in length and 13mm in width at its widest point. The dragon holds a circular ball in its jaws which is 6mm in diameter. Its snout is broad and its eyes are oval and bulbous; there are rows of circular indentations either side of the snout and beneath and behind the eyes. The dragon has two small triangular-shaped ears set well back on the top of the head, which is fairly flat. The neck has a circumferential ring of circular indentations around it; it i…
