A copper-alloy fragment of a Medieval strap loop, dating to AD 1300-1400. It is the top bar of the loop; it is semi-oval in cross-section and has two lobes at the ends and a domed boss at the middle. The loop frame breaks below the lobes; the fragments of the frame suggest it ha a rectangular cross-section. Cf with Egan-Pritchard (1991, p. 234, fig. 149, nos. 1259, 1261, 1263). A fragment of a gilded copper alloy early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) strap fitting. The objects consists of a roughly lozenge-shaped plate with a rectangular loop c.5mm wide projecting at a right-angle from the reverse of its wider end. The narrower outer tip of the place is missing and it has two small circular holes positioned just behind the centre of each side. Faint transverse grooves can be seen on the wider end of the plate and ring-and-dot motifs elsewhere, but all are obscured by corrosion. Traces of gilding is visible in places within this decoration. The finder suggests anot…

A fragment of a copper alloy strap fitting of probable early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. The object comprises a fragment of loop with an arm projecting from its outer edge culminating in part of a flat plate. The loop is lozenge-shaped in cross-section and only around c.1/3 survives. The ajoining arm is c.5mm in length, circular in cross-section, with slightly inwards curving sides. The plate projecting from its outer end is roughly triangular with a break across its outer end and is deeply recessed on one face. It has a separate copper alloy rivet in situ through its centre. It consists of a ring of sub-circular cross-section, with flattened ends expanded into sub-rectangular plates positioned opposite one another, each pierced with two small circular holes. The outer face of each end of the hoop is decorated with afine transverse groove just below the plate. Five similar examples have been excavated at Flixborough, including three from mid-9th century contexts (Rogers et al. 2009, 25, no.136-140). An incomplete copper alloy strap fitting of probable early medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. It consists of two oval loops attached together in a figure of eight shape. The outer end of one loop is missing and the breaks remain fairly fresh. Figure of eight shaped fittings are common Anglo-Saxon ancillary harness fittings, holding the reins in place (Fern 2005, 62, fig.5.2), but this simple form was also used in other periods and is likely to have had various functions. An incomplete copper alloy strap slide of probable Roman date. The object consists of around 40% of a flat disc with a globular knop projecting from the centre of the outer face. A rectangular cross-sectioned lug projects to one side of the reverse, terminating in a well-worn break. The position of this lug suggests that there was either a similar one to the other side or that it is part of a larger strap loop. The surface of the metal is corroded and there is damage around the edges of the disc. See PAS records, SUSS-3A6693, BH-B6AA64, WMID-05E7D1 and ESS-5F3488 for parallels. …

An incomplete copper alloy probable late Iron Age to early Roman strap fitting. It consists of a sub-circular loop, sub-circular in cross-section with a waisted globular knop projecting from the outer edge of one side. Opposite this knop the hoop is considerably more worn suggesting that a strap was secured here. Inside the loop the surface has a shiny green patina, while outside it is corroded. The form and patina suggest a late Iron Age to early Roman date, although no direct parallel has been found. Length: 36.95mm, width: 28.19mm, thickness: 6.88mm, weight: 20.14g
