A copper-alloy strainer or skimmer of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1250 - 1700). The strainer is formed of a disc of copper-alloy sheet metal which has been perforated by hand from the reverse using a variety of different shaped puches for the holes. The perforations are irregularly positioned and vary in size. The sides of the sheet are curved backwards, but there is no evidence of attachment. The disc is 87.6mm diameter, 14mm thick (sheet metal 0.6mm thick) and weighs 48.8g.
Similar examples are known from the medieval period onwards, such as Egan (1998, 158) fig. 127, w…

A cast copper-alloy strainer or skimmer, perhaps from the mouth of a vessel, of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is disc shaped in form, currently folded beyond 90 degrees perhaps as a result of post-depositional damage. The objext is pierced with multiple circular apertures that cover its entire surface. It measures 42.33mm in diameter, 0.74mm in thickness, and 6.90g in weight.
This is probably a strainer, skimmer or similar object, with possible larger parallels noted from London (Egan, 1998: nos. 437-440). It is likely to be of Medieval date, c.13th-15th centuries AD, although…

An incomplete sheet copper-alloy handle attachment from a strainer or skimmer of probable late-Medieval to early Post-Medieval date. The base of the handle attachment and a small fragment of the skimmer itself survive, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. It has a flat, rectangular back plate that tapers to a rounded base. On the back face of this plate is a second rectangular plate of equal dimensions and form, but which projects at its centre to form a rectangular socket that runs the length of the plates and would have enabled attachment of a handle. The two plates are held…

An incomplete copper-alloy circular strainer of Medieval date. Only part of the plate survives, the remainder of the object is missing due to old breaks, now worn.
It is flat with multiple punched circular perforations before terminating in old breaks.
This strainer measures 23.56mm in length, 12.06mm in width, 1.04mm in thickness, 0.82g in weight.
There is a similar example from London (Egan, 1998, p. 158, no. 440) and recorded on the PAS database (SF-682A7D).

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, probably a strainer, skimmer or possibly from the spout of a vessel of Medieval or later date. Only a small fragment of the object, currently folded to an angle of approximately 45 degrees, survives intact, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. It is flat, with curved outer edge that suggests it may originally have been circular or oval in form. It has multiple circular perforations arranged in relatively neat rows and terminates in old breaks in all directions other than the outer edge. The fragment has a dark green patina and measures 2…
