Roman to post-medieval steelyard weight, made of lead with an iron core. It is sub-conical (not perfectly circular or oval). The iron core projects from the apex as an incomplete loop (now a mere pair of stumps terminating in worn breaks) and from the base, off-centre, as a small hemispherical protrusion. Not closely datable. 1st to 18th century.
Diameter (at base): 38.4 x 34.9mm. Height: 36.6mm. Weight 130.4g

An incomplete, cast, lead weight, of probable Roman to Medieval date (c. AD 43-1350).
The weight is conical in form with a flat, tapering up from the sub-circular base to a truncated apex. At this point are two iron protrusions, probably remnants of an iron attachment loop, which is now missing. The sides of the weight are decorated with equidistant linear grooves from base to top.
The weight is patinated creamy-brown with patches of metallic grey. It is worn with some areas of pitting and gouging which obscure the linear d…

An incomplete cast, lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410).
The weight is broadly bi-conical in form with both sections tapering to a rounded point. One section appears slightly truncated; it is possible that this would have been the site of an attachment loop would have been attached. This would probably have been made of iron. Although minimal there is some evidence of iron corrosion on the surface of the weight at one apex.
The surface of the weight is undecorated and is patinated creamy-brown with patches of grey. …

Biconical lead steelyard weight, of probable Roman date, with an embedded U-shaped, circular cross-sectioned copper-alloy loop at the top. Another copper-alloy loop, also circular in cross-section, is linked to the first one. This is teardrop shaped, with one terminal coiled three times into a now vacant tube and the other terminating close to the tube’s lower-side opening. The coiled terminal seems likely to be broken and missing further coils if it was to suspend the weight securely. If this is the case, the break is worn.
The upper and lower ‘halves’ of the weight are of…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete probable Roman lead and iron steelyard weight dating to circa AD 43-410. It is sub-oval in plan with one side virtually flat and the other rounded, appearing almost D-shaped in section. A corroded iron rod passed through the centre, with two stubs projecting from the apex, which would have formed a loop.
Steelyard weights with extending rods are typical of the Roman period.

An incomplete lead and iron steelyard weight of possible Roman date. It is biconical in shape with the remains of a corroded iron rod passed through the centre. There is damage and distortion to both ends and the surface is corroded and scratched.
Although steelyard weights were in use from the Roman to post-medieval periods, examples like this one, with a central rod extending from both ends are thought to be primarily of Roman date.

A copper-alloy steelyard weight of Roman date and anthropomorphic shape. This weight is moulded/cast into the shape of the front of a human head from chin to top of head. Above the head the remains of an integral suspension loop project upwards. This artefact has an incomplete height of 40.5mm, maximum width of 33.2mm and weighs 20.61g. The front is convex and the reverse concavely hollow. However, the edges of the reverse are flattened as if prepared to butt-up or rest against something else that is flat. The flattened areas of the edge vary in thickness between the convex front and …

A complete lead and iron steelyard weight of possible Roman date. It is biconical in shape, its upper end slightly more elongated than its lower, with a corroded iron rod passed through the centre, forming a loop at the apex. Interestingly the surface has numerous small flattened pieces of lead of a slightly different alloy attached in different places. Possibly this was to repair damage to the surface and/or to make up the weight if the item was underweight.
Although steelyard weights were in use from the Roman to post-medieval periods, examples like this one, with a central rod…
