Fragment of the top of a post-medieval copper-alloy pipe tamper. Its takes the form of a stylised hand, clenched into a fist, grasping what is probably a rolled-up scroll. Only half of the scroll is extant, represented by a cone projecting, wide end first, from one side of the fist, The other half is lost to a worn break on the other side, where only a very short stump survives. The hand is broadly conical and oval in cross-section, with the wrist at the pointed end. From here the shank of the tamper has broken off and the break worn. At the top, the fingers and thumb are represented …

A copper-alloy Post-Medieval pipe tamper, dating to AD 1650-1850. It consists of a sub-rectangular cross-sectioned shaft, which has at one end a cylindrical element defined by two raised collars, functioning as tamper. Centred in the middle of the shaft there is an integrally cast finger oval loop, which bears a moulded animal (possibly lion) head on the outside edge. As a decorative link between the shaft and the lower and upper edges of the loop frame there is c-shaped scroll.

An incomplete copper alloy post-medieval or modern figurine, probably part of a pipe tamper. The object is moulded in the shape of a lewd female figure. Both arms are bent lifting her skirts to reveal her bare legs and genitalia beneath. The sleeves of her dress are gathered above her elbows. The features of her face are crudely defined and her head is rounded with no evidence of hair. Both legs terminate in breaks at the ankles, below which the figurine was presumably attached to a circular section for tamping down pipe tobacco originally. Apart from this break it survives in relativ…

A cast copper-alloy pipe tamper combined with signet ring, of Post-Medieval date. The finger ring has a circular band that is oval in section and flares to a flattened oval bezel. This has incised decoration on its front face comprising an oval border within which are the initials I or E B either side of a central foliate motif. At the opposite side of the band to the bezel is the integral pipe tamper. This has a double rectangular collar followed by a flaring conical shaft with raised double collar at its outer edge. The upper surface of the tamper is flat and undecorated, and the en…

A copper-alloy object which is possibly a pipe tamper of post-medieval date. It has a central circular ring with two arms extending outwards from this in opposite directions. Each arm is square in section and increases in size towards a terminal. There is a linear notch extending out from the central hole a short distance down one of the two arms. The object type is uncertain but it may well be a pipe tamper used in conjunction with tobacco pipes. There is some limited evidence for percussive marks on either hammer face which are both less smooth than the remainder of the object. Howe…

A worn copper-alloy object, probably a Post-Medieval to Modern pipe-tamper. It has a tapering conical shaft with flat base and slightly faceted sides. At the top of the shaft is an integrally cast decoratrive terminal in the form of a deer or stag with projecting, rounded nose, semi-circular eyes, small pointed ears and projecting antlers. The back face of the terminal is flat and the tops of the antlers are perhaps incomplete due to old breaks, although this is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. Traces of a dark green patina are visible in places, however the surfaces o…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pipe tamper of Post-Medieval to Modern date. The tamper is in the form of a claw hammer but is missing half of the claw, the hammerhead and the tamper itself due to old breaks. It has a hollow cylindrical shaft that tapers slightly towards the head and has vertical seams on opposing sides of the exterior, incised decoration spiraling from the base to the head, and may have been threaded on the interior. There is a small circular perforation on the back face of the shaft beneath the claw. The block at the top of the shaft is rectangular in shape. At one e…

A lead pipe tamper, the back face is flat and the front face moulded, it is roughly triangular in surviving shape and measures 37.25mm in length and 35.50mm in width.
The object is crudely moulded and depicts a standing male figure who is engaged in sexual intercourse with a woman. The standing man supports the nearside woman's leg around his waist. The figures appear to be naked, although it is hard to tell as the modelling is crude and the details of the figures which were probably originally poorly indicated and are now even more so due to wear.
Post medieval in date.

The shaft is faceted with the longitudinal casting seam clearly visible down both sides. The hammer part has a flat rounded terminal and a chisel like terminal it measures 29mm in length and 6.1mm in width it has transverse grooves across its centre and around its rounded end.
