An incomplete cast lead mount of medieval to post-medieval date (c.1300-1600). Description: The mount is in the form of a five-armed wavy star, two of which surive, the rest being stubs. Each slightly curved arm is sub-triangular in cross-section so that they are rasied at their centres. Smaller arms, inbeween these, are all broken off at their bases. The reverse of the mount is flat. There are two tiny circular indents on the left, and it is unclear if these are mirrored on the right. The mount has a medium grey patina.  Measurements: Length: 27.4mm; Width: 22.6m…

An incomplete probably Medieval lead alloy mount dating to circa AD 1150-1450. It is broadly square shaped in plan with amorphous broadly oblique edges. One face has three perpendicular incisions which are probably the result of damage rather than decoration. In the centre one face is the remains of a shank now survived by a blob of iron staining. Length: 39.3mm; Width: 32.2mm; Thickness: 6.3mm; Weight: 62.44g.

A complete lead mount or plaque of probable medieval date. It is roughly square in shape, but slightly misshapen. The outer face has a raised rim around the edge with the moulded design of a male figure in the centre. Only the upper part of the figure is depicted with a halo behind his head. He holds what looks like a key in one raised hand and a square object, perhaps a gospel, in the other. There are faint traces of cross-hatching on the reverse suggesting that it was intended to be afixed to something originally. It survives in excellent condition. The figure may be a depiction …

A fragment probably from a post-medieval lead star mount. Such mounts typically take the form of a stylised six-armed wavy star, but only one arm and parts of two others survive. Each arm has a raised ridge in the middle and the centre of the mount appears to be concave (there may have been a small hole in the very centre originally). See PAS record SF-7EFB69, which was found in the same area, for comparison. A similar mount was excavated in London (Egan 2005, 69, no.309) from a c.AD1500-1550 context. Egan (ibid.) notes that others have been found at 'Clarendon Palace in Wiltshire,…

An incomplete post-medieval gilded lead star mount. The mount is in the form of a stylised six-armed wavy star. The outer face is decorated with a raised ring and dot in the centre and a raised line along the centre of each arm. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Traces of gilding and a what appears to be a reddish corrosion product can be seen on the outer face. A very similar example was excavated in London (Egan 2005, 69, no.309) from a c.AD1500-1550 context. Egan (ibid.) notes that others have been found at 'Clarendon Palace in Wiltshire, Eltham Palace in Kent and at the site…

A lead mount. It is an oval shape and is bent, probably due to plough damage. It is c.47.9mm x 42.76mm, but one edge appears to be incomplete, and the object may have been approximately circular originally. It is c. 2.5mm in thickness and weighs 38.14g. It has a central perforation 4.59mm in diameter, with a further five smaller, irregular holes, evenly spaced around it, closer to the circumference. One surface, presumably the upper, has scored lines, one roughly joining up the ring of perforations, and others forming small triangles and polygons. The object may have formed a backing…

This lead mount is shaped in the form of a bird. The central part, including the back of the bird and its head, is shaped an arranged not unlike a Roman chicken brooch, but instead of being enameled it is highly embellished with ornament as rows of pellets, etc, to suggest feathers. However, from the rim of the central oval there extend two wings, one either side but not symmetrically arranged, one (larboard) following the curve of the body and the other turning outward at the tip. There is also a tail formed of a flat triangle of lead with bossed details. Beneath the forward edges of …
