The four fragments of this object were found in March 2020 in close proximity, with a maximum gap of about 18m between them, by two detectorists carrying out a systematic survey on a Roman site that has evidence for a villa-type building in south-west Suffolk. Description 1. A single link, 32mm long (incomplete), 17mm wide and 2.5mm thick, weight 5.45gm. A lozenge shape with a single circular loop projecting in the same plane from one end, flanked on either side by rounded lobes, and at the other end, also in the same plane, a pair of damaged loops. The complete single cen…

A copper-alloy probably Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) chain link, dating to AD 600-700. The link has a number eight shape; the two loops have rounded outer sides narrowing to the point where they meet and cross in the centre. The frame is oval in cross-section and slightly curved in profile. The outer end of the loops have a worn inner edge, due to the use. The surfaces are in fair condition and bear traces of iron corrosion products. See other examples on this database: NMS-5797E7, NMS-FDD8D1. An incomplete copper-alloy chain of probable Medieval to Post-Medieval date. Only two links survive, the remainder of the object is missing due to old breaks, now worn. They are formed from sheets of copper-alloy folded to form a circular loop. This chain meaures 13.16mm in length, 6.55mm in width, 0.81mm in thickness, 0.48g in weight. There is a similar example from London (Egan and Pritchard, 19991, p. 319, no. 1595).

Two links of a copper-alloy chain, which could be Roman or later in date. Each link is created by a strip of copper-alloy with oval shaped terminals being folded in half, so the two oval terminals of one link have the central fold of the other link passing through them. The two links measure 33.42mm in length and 10.80mm in width.

Copper-alloy link from a chain, in the shape of a figure-of-eight. One loop is blocked by iron corrosion. 16 mm long by 7 mm wide. Chain links are hard to date, as they are functional objects, but this one appears to be of some age; it is similar to Winchester no. 4064 (Biddle 1990, fig. 351) which is from a 12th-century context.

Link in the shape of a figure of eight. Each half appears to be worn internally as if the link has been part of a taut chain. The metal is strange - a bubbly grey patina looks like that of a lead-tin alloy, but the link is quite light and where the surface has broken away the metal underneath is deep brown. It is not iron (it does not react to a magnet) and so it must either be a copper alloy or a more unusual alloy. Parallels for the shape can be found among Roman iron chains, and there is a similar but smaller example from a 12th-century context in Winchester (Hinton in Biddle 19…
