A cast copper alloy terminal in the form of an eagle's head, probably a cart fitting of Roman date. It is hollow and would presumably have once been attached to the cart by means of a now missing iron tang. At the base of the terminal is a raised collar with moulded double circumferential band and an uneven wavy bottom edge that is perhaps deliberately shaped or simply resultant from post-depositional damage. Above the collar the eagle's head emerges from two moulded leaves or petals that project upwards and outwards to either side of the head. The head of the eagle has both moulded an…

A worn copper alloy hook-shaped terminal of Roman date, probably from a cart fitting. The terminal is circular in section and in the shape of a bird's head, perhaps a swan, that has an elongated beak with pointed tip and circular eyes on the sides of the head. The neck of the swan curves at an angle of ninety degrees and expands towards an old break where it would have presumably been attached to a more substantial cart fitting. This example is pitted in places and with a dark green/brown patina. It measures 38.69mm in length, 25mm in width, 9.89mm in thickness, and weighs 11.89g. S…

A complete cast copper-alloy possibly Roman terminal in the form of an eagle's head. The terminal is hollow, and consists of a shaft, which is circular in section which terminates in the form of an eagles head. Inside the open base of the shaft there are U-shaped notches. Just above the edge of the open base there are a pair transverse grooves and there are two circular holes near to the edge, one below the beak and another to one side of this. The beak also has a circular hole through it, presumably these holes are all associated with attachment. The eyes are incised lozenge shape…

Copper alloy hollow-cast eagle-head mount. The base is almost flat with a slight flange, forming an oval aperture at the neck of the bird. On the top of the head a roughly cut hole results in a small (max 10 x 6 mm) hole. Below this the eyes are outlined in relief and have deep circular centres. The prominent beak has a marked cavity for the mouth opening. Other surface features are indicated by relatively shallow incised lines, badly obscured by corrosion and abrasion of the surface; they mainly consist of lozenge shapes (for feathers) on the neck, with a line of deeper grooves each s…
