a copper alloy Roman bow brooch fragment. It is the head and upper bow of a headstud brooch. It has short deep wings with mouldings forming three steps from the wing-tips to the bow. The chain-loop is broken off, there is a semi-circular axis bar casing behind each wing, and the pin is missing. The bow is D-shaped, with a headstud above a central panel of lozenge decoration bordered by triangles which could have held enamel. An incomplete copper-alloy Roman colchester derivative double pierced lug type, the wings, spring and an upper fragment of the bow survive the rest of this brooch is missing due to old breaks, now worn. The wings are semi-cylindrical and are decorated with transverse grooves on its terminals. The individual coils of the spring can no longer be seen due to corrosion. The bow is D-shaped in section. This brooch measures 13.34mm in length and 24.65mm in width.

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of trumpet type, incomplete, missing most of chain loop and lower bow, only a fragment of a copper-alloy pin survives. The pin fragment is hinged on a copper-alloy bar which passes through an enclosed case. The head is plain apart from two border grooves along the upper edge. The bow has a triangular section due to a central longitudinal ridgeand has transverse mouldings at the break. The brooch measures 25.85mm in surviving length and 12.43mm in width across the head.

A fragment of a copper-alloy Roman bow brooch or hod hill type, only the head and a fragment of the upper bow survive the rest of the brooch is missing due to old breaks. The head is formed from the rolled over bow terminal. The bow is rectangular in shape and has a transverse moulding and a central longitudinal groove. This brooch measures 14.33mm in surviving length and 12.75mm in width.

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of hinge headed type, 1st-2nd century in date. Missing pin and with incomplete sides and catchplate due to wear. The head has a cylindircal pin bar case, the bow has an upper swelling with a circular shaped indentation in its centre and then narrows before flaring out into an oval shaped terminal with two enamelled lozenge shapes. This brooch measures 33.10mm in length and 10.66mm in width.

An incomplete worn copper-aloy Roman bow brooch of knee type, similar in form, although not enamelled to Hattatt 1661 and 1222 (1989, fig 194). The head has a worn scar where it may have had a chain loop, the head is semi-cylindrical and missing the axis bar, the pin is also missing as it the foot of the brooch. The bow has a D-shaped section and tapers to a worn incomplete temrinal. This example measures 19.66mm in lenght and 8.49mm in width.

a copper alloy Roman bow brooch. A Colchester derivative type, with semi-cylindrical wings, coil and spring missing. There is moulded decoration on the wings, two grooves and ridges on each, and the narrow bow has a central rib. there are traces of white metal coating particularly across the wings. The catchplate and foot are incomplete. The brooch measures 29.84mm in length and 20.67mm in width. It weighs 3.91g. Examples of similar brooches from Hatcheston are illustrated in Blagg 2004, fig.64, no.116, and are date to the mid to late first century.

The bow is flat and tapers to a rounded tip c.1.5mm wide. The brooch is 12.75mm in width across the spring case, 30.83mm in length and weighs 3.36g. Fragment from a worn copper alloy Colchester derivative Roman bow brooch. Only a short section of the bow, measuring 37.28mm in length, and part of the catchplate survive, the remainder lost due to old breaks. The bow is approximately triangular in section, tapers towards the foot of the brooch, and has a large central rib running its entire length. There is no other visible decoration. The entire fragment measures 37.28mm in lenght, 5.12mm in width, 3.46mm in thickness, and weighs 3.14g.

The bow is flat-backed, with moulded longitudinal decoration of five ribs separated by grooves. The wing case is semi-cylindrical, and the foot of the bow is missing. The surviving length of the brooch is 20.88, and width across the wings is 17.38mm. The brooch fragment weighs 3.72g. A similar brooch from Hatcheston, dating to the mid first century AD is illustrated in Blagg 2004, no.76.
