An incomplete copper-alloy Bronze Age arrowhead, dating to 2500-1500 BC. It is barbed and tanged, having one of the barbs broken off; both faces have a low mid ridge, which flattens towards the tang. The tang is rounded at the base and the overall cross-section of the arrowhead is slightly lozengiform. It has relatively crude notches between the tang and barbs, and it might have been poorly cast. Early Bronze Age metalwork often follows earlier and contemporary lithic forms and these examples are no exception, paralleling the more common 'barbed and tanged' flint arrowheads. Cf LEI…

An incomplete iron medieval socketed 'broadhead' arrowhead. Both sides of the blade are missing leaving its original form unclear. A low, rounded mid-rib runs down the centre of both faces of the blade, expanding to develop into an elongated circular cross-sectioned socket at its inner end. The socket is c.18.00mm in length and c.10.5mm in diameter. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. This is probably one of Jessop's (1997, 2) 'early multi-purpose forms', which he suggests date mainly to the 11th to 14th century AD (ibid.). In the LMMC catalogue (1967) ty…

A complete knapped flint arrowhead dating to the Early Neolithic, c. 4000-3000 BC. This is a leaf-shaped example, being broadly lenticular in plan with a widened butt and tapering sides that converge to form a sharp point. Manufactured on a tertiary flake of dark brownish black flint, the arrowhead demonstrates invasive retouch (pressure flaking) on both faces-though this has not removed all of the original flaked surface. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 31.4mm in length, 14.83mm wide at its widest point, 2.66mm thick at its midpoint and weighs 1.74g.

A complete knapped flint arrowhead dating to the later Neolithic, c. 3300-2400 BC. It is broadly triangular in plan, one edge straight and the other slightly angled, converging to its point (now missing). At the base of the arrowhead is a rather stubby tang, slightly damaged where it connects with the straight edge of the arrowhead. On the opposite side of the tang, a shallow curving notch is visible. Manufactured on a tertiary flake of bluish white patinated flint, the straight edge demonstrates directly applied pressure flaked long removals extending up its entire edge, the angled e…

A complete copper alloy trilobed socketed arrow or projectile head of uncertain date. The object is triangular in cross-section with three regularly spaced fins, each expanding towards the inner edge and diminishing towards the outer tip. At the inner end there is a short socket, circular in cross-section. Although socketed medieval arrowheads with a triangular cross-section are found, these typically have a longer socket and less pronounced fins than this example (see LMMC, 66, fig.16, nos.8-12). Instead it most closely resembles Iron Age and Roman examples from the southern Medi…

Late Neolithic chisel type arrowhead, made from an unpatinated tertiary flake of grey/brown flint; with the (now removed) bulb of percussion angled towards the right side of the ventral face of the broad cutting edge. The lateral edges expand from a 10 mm butt and are semi-invasively and bifacially flaked, and the cutting edge is similarly reouched only on the dorsal face, one corner of this edge is missing, presumably broken in antiquity as the break is glossy. Otherwise it is a good and large example of the type.

An incomplete knapped flint leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-3000 BC. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan with a straight, even profile that tapers towards its tip, and has been manufactured on a flake of very fine translucent light grey flint. Both faces of the arrowhead demonstrate heavily invasive covering retouch achieved by the means of pressure flaking, which has removed all of the original flake surfaces. The arrowhead has suffered post-depositional edge damage down its lateral edges, and part of the butt has broken away, leaving it square instead …

A complete and unfinished leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-300 BC. It is broadly leaf-shaped in plan view and plano convex in section, with a rounded upper surface. Secondary working in the form of pressure flaking is evinced on the upper surface, which has been used to form the right hand edge, tip, and rough-out the left hand edge of the arrowhead. The underside is completely plain and demonstrates no modification whatsoever. The butt is unformed, and the majority of the piece retains its original surface, with only the aforementioned areas demonstrating…

A complete flint early Neolithic leaf-shaped arrowhead. It is formed from a secondary flake with a very small amount of cortex attached to one face at the distal end. It is large in size, roughly ovoid in shape and pointed oval in cross-section. Both faces are covered with scaled retouch and there is addition irregular, short, low angle retouch in places around the edges. The flint is light, translucent brown in colour with some orange staining in places. The proximal end has a small flake removed on one face creating a concave section, which may be intended to aid attachment. Leng…

An incomplete copper alloy probable early Bronze Age arrowhead. It is triangular in shape with a slight barb to the one surviving side of the base. There is a narrow central mid-rib, which expands into a splayed tang at the base. A shiny dark brown patina survives in places, but there is heavy pitting and patches of bright green corrosion. There is significant damage around the edges making the original form difficult to discern in places and it is bent out of shape slightly. Early Bronze Age arrowheads are very rare finds in Britain and very few have been recorded on the PAS datab…

A snapped, struck flint object, possibly an oblique arrowhead of Neolithic date. It is struck from an unpatinated grey/brown flint and is roughly triangular in form, oval in cross-section, and snapped towards the tip(?). At the butt(?) end both sides curve to a pointed tang that is positioned off-centred and towards one side of the object. Both faces have covering, scaled and low-angled retouch. It measures 24.22mm in length, 18.36mm in width, 4.45mm in thickness, and 1.71g in weight. This is probably a snapped oblique arrowhead of late Neolithic date, c.2700-2550 BC.

An unpatinated struck flint object of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date. It is struck from a dark grey/brown flint and is roughly oval in form and pointed-oval in cross section. At one end (proximal end?) one edge has been retouched to produce a more triangular terminal that is in some respects similar to oblique arrowheads and similar points or projectiles. The dorsal face has invasive, scaled and low angled retouch coverin all edges and all of the proximal(?) end, although an area at the centre of the face remains untouched.
