County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead, or lead alloy, button of 18th century AD date, of a type often made in silver or cut steel (see Bailey, G. 2004 p.65). Compare with PAS record CAM-7EE27C, which has almost identical decoration.
This complete object weighs 21.03g. It has a circular shape with diameter of 26.5mm. In profile the button's head has a semi-circular form, convexly domed to the front with a flat reverse. The current maximum thickness over the button is 7.5mm. However, this was originally slightly greater due to damage to the central decorative boss.&n…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Post-Medieval lead cloth seal. Disc one is the only part of this artefact to survive. As a result of this, it is impossible to determine whether this was originally a two or four disc type of cloth seal. The disc has a width of 31.9mm. The disc increases to give a length axis measurement of 35.8mm when including the remains of the connecting strip.
The outer surface of disc one is covered in relief detail some of which has now completely worn away (unless this was ill-defined when first used). A border formed of closely set pellets, of c.1.0mm diamete…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Medieval lead bifaced token. The token is sub-circular in shape. The edge of both sides is slightly raised to give a border of 1.8mm width. Both sides are decorated with relief motif, however, the design is different on each side.
One side of the flan has a large stylised fleur-de-lis at the centre, filling almost the whole field. Instead of all parts being joined the central erect stem of the fleur and the two side stems/leaves with outward curving tips are separated by c.2.7mm. The bases of all three parts of the fleur join to the flan's edge border. The tip of the c…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Medieval to Post-Medieval lead seal matrix. This artefact weighs 12.41g and is sub-circular in shape with diameters of 22.1mm (and 20.8mm on the assumed width axis). The face of the matrix is flat and appears to be undecorated. It may be that this was a blank matrix which was never completed with a design and legend. Alternatively it is possible that a design and or legend may once have been present and has become so extremely worn, through use, intentional damage or post-depositionally, that it is now completely illegible.
Viewed in profile the matrix body is wedge shaped. The…

Record ID: CAM-660358
Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete lead seal matrix of Medieval date. The remains of this artefact show that the original shape of the matrix was a pointed-oval (vesica-shaped). This has broken in half with an irregular transverse width-wise break. The remains weigh 4.42g, have a width of 19.1mm and incomplete length of 17.9mm.
The matrix face shows the top half of a large single fleur de Lis. A thin linear border, which remains approximately parallel to the edge of the artefact, separates this central motif from the legend. The linear border is set approximately 4.7mm in from the edge of the artefact.…
