Object type: SLEEVE CLASP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy sleeve clasp of early Anglo-Saxon date. On either side of the central flattened bar are two pairs of deeply incised grooves.
This is the catch-piece from an Anglo-Saxon wrist clasp. The use of a straight bar with integrally cast sewing lugs indicates that it belongs to Hines' Form B12, which is datable to the late-5th to 6th centuries AD (Hines, 1993: 46-49).
