Late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy Colchester brooch of Mackreth’s (2011) type 2.a or 2.b (the standard British type with a catchplate pierced by fretwork or square holes). It is largely complete except for the catchplate, which survives only as a series of stubs between incomplete openwork voids, and the shaft of the pin, approximately a third of which is missing from the tip.
The head consists of a pair of short flat wings and an integral spring that emerges from between them on the lower side of the reverse. The spring coils up and around a separate axis bar three time…

Thirty-nine sherds of Iron Age hand-built flint gritted pottery, all body apart from two flat basal, all reduced, many with the external or both surfaces oxidised. The density and sorting of the inclusions are variable, as are their sizes, the largest being c.4mm across, most much smaller. Weight 217g. 8th century BC - mid 1st century AD.

Fragment of copper alloy Iron Age / Roman Langton Down brooch. Broken cylindrical wings enclose the remains of the copper alloy spring with seven extant loops, pin missing. The upper end of the bow at the junction with the wings is convex. Bow decorated with multiple longitudinal grooves and ribs. Lower half of bow and catch-plate missing. Extant width 20mm. Extant length 19mm. c. AD 20-65.

Incomplete copper alloy Langton Down brooch of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date (c. AD25 - 60). Most of the lower bow, the pin, foot and catchplate are missing. The wings form a cylindrical hood, now partially broken which houses the spring. The bow is divided from the head by a semi-circular ridge. Below are six vertical grooves alternating with ridges. It tapers along its length, terminating in an old break.

Incomplete Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy Aesica brooch dating to the period c. 20 BC - AD 60. The pin mechanism and part of the catchplate are missing. The head exhibits C-shaped wings which would have housed the sprung pin mechanism, now missing. The bow arches back from the head and expands in width to a point, before narrowing and arching downwards to a base in the centre of the rosette-shaped back plate. Incomplete, very abrabed and heavily ferrous stained Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper alloy brooch of uncertain type, spring, pin, ends and rear of the wings and most of the edges of the upper part and all of the lower part missing. The upper part of the bow is straight, flat and wide, with a slight suggestion of roundness, and it springs directly from the front of the head. Perhaps a Langton Down. Cf. Mackreth 2011, pl. 19, upper row, but with no central perforation. Extant width and length 25.7 and 21.3mm. c.20 - c.65 AD.
