Object type: INGOT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

Description: Complete long silver ingot of slightly irregular shape, but with a clear rounded top and slightly flattened underside. It has one neatly rounded end, 11mm wide and 5.8mm thick. One long edge runs roughly at right angles to this end, and the other long edge flares slightly. The maximum width of 13.5mm is close to the other end, and here there is a rounded angle, with the ingot tapering steeply to meet the other long edge in a rounded point. The ingot is sub-triangular or drop-shaped in cross-section, with the long straight edge being thicker and the top then …

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver strip, probably a finger-ring, now in two pieces (broken during discovery). It is bent out of shape but appears to originally have been circular, with half of the circle surviving (c. 20mm in original diameter). The strip has a consistent width of 4.5mm to 5mm (perhaps depending on how worn the edges are) and is a low D-shape in cross-section, 1.0mm thick. There is no decoration on either the convex exterior or the flat interior. One of the ends (on the smaller fragment) is neatly cut across and finished, and although the other is more rounded and possibly wo…

Tiny and incomplete Roman copper-alloy Colchester Derivative Harlow brooch. The lower part of the bow, the catchplate and the pin are missing to worn breaks. The wings are complete, or almost complete, C-shaped in cross-section and undecorated. The tip of the wing on the left side (the wearer’s right) appears to be slightly distorted, perhaps due to impact or pressure. The spring is in-situ behind the wings. There are three coils on each side of a near-central double-pierced lug which projects rearwards from the back of the head. The chord joining the far coils together p…

Late Iron Age to early Roman copper-alloy Colchester brooch of Mackreth’s (2011) type 2.a or 2.b (the standard British type with a catchplate pierced by fretwork or square holes). It is largely complete except for the catchplate, which survives only as a series of stubs between incomplete openwork voids, and the shaft of the pin, approximately a third of which is missing from the tip. The head consists of a pair of short flat wings and an integral spring that emerges from between them on the lower side of the reverse. The spring coils up and around a separate axis bar three time…

Fragment of a Roman copper-alloy spoon of Crummy Type 3, consisting of a short length of the stem and a tiny fragment of the bowl, connected at an offset junction. The stem is rectangular, nearly square, in cross-section. When considered from the side, with the concave face of the bowl facing upwards, the stem can be said to taper gently in thickness and expand abruptly in width as it develops into the junction. On the top there is step-up of about a millimetre, and then another, followed by a low rectangular slot or notch, and then arguably two step-downs, now very rounded by wear. At…

Fragment of a Romano-British copper-alloy Colchester Ddrivative Harlow Brooch of Mackreth 2011, 4.a.. Only the head of the bow, the wings and the double-pierced lug on the reverse are extant. The wings are plain, C-shaped in cross-section and taper in width from centre to tip. One is slightly thicker than the other, probably due to wear. The bow projects forward from the centre of the wings a very short distance then terminates in a worn break. The pierced lug develops into a crest which continues along the front of the bow to the break as a concave-sided median rib. The lug is shaped…

Description: Gold pendant, of roughly circular shape, made from small pieces of gold sheet soldered together. An incomplete Roman copper alloy brooch dating to the period circa 65-150 AD. The object consists of plain semi-circular wings which curve to seat the spring. A projecting plate with pierced holes sits at the junction of the bow and the wings, containing two holes for a chord and an axis bar from the spring, each of which is now lost. The upper hole would have been for the chord whilst the lower for the axis bar (Mackreth 2011: 50). One of the wings has now broken but, from the surviving wing, it is possible to extrapolate a complete wing width of circa 28mm. A central longitudinal ri…
