A sherd from the body of an early Bronze Age vessel, dating to the period c.2350-c.1200 BC. Hard, coarse fabric containing plentiful poorly sorted quartz pieces (<2mm). The outer surface and core are an oxidised orange-red colour while the inner surface is a lighter grey. The outer surface is decorated with bands of three and two parallel lines of small square indentations. The fragment is too small to provide an indication of the original size and form of the vessel.  With thanks to Carlotta Marchetto, Oxford Archaeology East for identification help.  Length: 30.16mm, w…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy handle from a medieval cooking vessel, most probably a posnet or skillet dated from the later medieval to the early post-medieval period (c. 1400-1600 AD). The handle comprises a flat bar that widens towards the centre and narrows towards the end where it rounds off and is angled slightly downwards. The handle has broken at the widest point of the bar. The foot projects at a shallow angle below the main bar of the handle and narrows to a rounded terminus. Across the top surface of the handle, there is a line of ring-dot motifs.  The handle'…

A sherd from the rim of a Roman ceramic Samian ware vessel.  The sherd comes from the rim of a deep-sided vessel, probably a bowl, but is too small to estimate the original diameter. The fabric is hard and fine, red-orange with a glossy red-orange slip. Probably of central Gaulish Les Martres-de-Veyre production (LMV SA), which was mostly exported to Britain in the early 2nd century AD. A Roman ceramic body sherd from a vessel dating to circa AD 43-250. The vessel is samian ware. It is rectangular sectioned with a deep orange, fine fabric with glossy slip. The outer face is adorned with relief decoration comprised of a transverse beaded groove with two opposed double arches separated by columns. 5 x fragments of medieval to post-medieval copper-alloy cooking vessels. Including three rim sherds and two leg sherds. One leg is an example of Butler et al's (2009) Type C, which is of 16th to 17th century date, while the others are too worn and fragmentary to assign anything other than a general medieval to post-medieval date range.

A fragment of a leg from a copper-alloy cooking vessel of probable post-medieval date. Only a section of the upper leg survives. This is roughly triangular in cross-section with a raised rib running longitudinally down the centre of the outer face. It is very irregular in shape suggesting that it may have been poorly cast during manufacture rather than just damaged from use.  This leg is probably an example of Butler et al's (2009, 4 & fig.4) Type A, a simple form which seems to have had a long chronology dating from the medieval period to at least the…

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy vessel mount/eschutcheon dating to circa AD 43-410. Now heavily abraded and incomplete it is broadly teardrop-shaped terminating in an old break. A now incomplete loop extends from the apex attached to a rectangular-sectioned bar on the reverse. The front face is now rendered convex but this is likely due to post depositional damage. The object is consistent with a number of similar mounts recorded on the database including: BERK-873B70, DUR-838BB5; SF-362F95 and GLO-166FE4 Length: 78.1mm; Width: 45.8mm; Thickness: 3.9mm; Weight: 72.66g.
