Copper alloy brooch, Colchester derivative hinged type. Missing pin, damaged wing and catchplate; bow very bent; patches of surface corrosion. Despite some iron coloured staining there is no response to a magnet from the hinge bar area. There are five grooves on each wing. The bow is flat backed with a fairly low rounded front and tapers to a blunt point. The upper bow has two centre grooves and an angled pair to each side. Copper alloy brooch fragment, Colchester derivative. Lower bow with catchplate only, corroded. The bow is narrow and D-section. The catchplate has a small circular and small triangular hole and has a pin groove. Surviving length 17mm. Catchplate details suggest this is a double pierced lug type of Colchester derivative as West Stow (West 1989, EAA 48, no 155) etc.

Bronze unit, some wear and some recent damage on the edge. Identifiable as VA 154-3 "Kentish uncertain", Hobbs 2484-2486 "uninscribed south-eastern bronze". Around 35 are listed on CCI database (http://www.writer2001.com/cciwriter2001/BritishLists/Cantii/Cantii_59.htm), the majority of located ones being from Kent and two from Essex (Tilbury, Maldon) - thus this eg is the farthest north found as yet.

CURATOR'S REPORT An incomplete silver? Anglo-Saxon pommel of 'cocked hat' type. Description of find Part of an early medieval sword pommel, silver, parcel gilt. Large parts of the pommel seem to have got torn away in antiquity. The silver pommel is decorated with three parallel, gilt ridges framing its lower edge and with two gilt slashes on its side. Remains of gilding are also visible around the two rivet sleeves in which the side of the pommel terminates. A copper-alloy incomplete possible buckle tongue which could be Roman or later in date. It has an open loop set at right angles to the pin, there is a transverse ridge between the loop and the pin. The pin is flat and rectangular in shape it tapers towards its missing tip. It measures 25.20mm in length and 5.97mm in width.
