A silver Roman denarius of Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161), dating to the period AD 148-149 (Reece period 7). COS IIII reverse type depicting Salus standing left feeding snake coiled around altar, holding a rudder on a globe. Mint of Rome.
The coin has an unusual red/brown patina, either as a result of preservation in the ground or alternatively it could represent a contemporary copy - looking at the lower half of the reverse it does seem that edge shows evidence of casting which would be consistent with the rather worn / unclear bust. .As RIC III, p. 48, no. 181.
