A sherd from a German Bartmann or Bellarmine stoneware jar dating c. 16th-17th century. The sherd is broadly sub-rectangular in plan view and comprises most of the moulded bearded face which adorned the neck of these ceramic vessels. The vessel has been manufactured on a wheel, evinced by the presence of prominent rilling marks on the inside surface, while the outer surface has been decorated with a speckled salt glaze which gives the sherd a mottled whitish brown appearance.
