An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly a very small buckle frame of uncertain date. It is missing one side due to old breaks and has very worn surfaces. The object is cylindrical in form, curving around at either end where it terminates in very worn old breaks. If this is indeed a buckle each of the ends would have joined a now missing bar that would have given the object an oval shaped frame. It measures 8.69mm in length, 4.65mm in width, 1.66mm in diameter and 0.12g in weight.

A sheet copper-alloy buckle plate of Roman or later date. It is formed from a single rectangular sheet folded in half to form an upper and lower plate of equal size, the lower plate slightly shorter in length. At the frame end the plate is cylindrical in form to accomodate the now missing buckle frame and at the open end there are two circular rivet holes, one of which contains a copper-alloy rivet with globular head. There are no traces of decoration and the object has a mid green patina. It measures 21.59mm in width, 14.76mm in length, 3.33mm in thickness at frame end, and weighs 2.…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle plate of Roman or later date. It comprises an incomplete central plate that is flat and rectangular in form, an incomplete projection visible at one end. This is decorated on its front face with an incised border that contains a double transverse zig-zag motif with triangles in each angle of the zig-zags. From one long edge of the plate extend the remains of a central rectangular arm and one side arm, both of which preserve traces of openwork decoration. The openwork motifs comprise rectangular apertures that extend to circular tops giving an alm…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly a buckle frame of uncertain date. What appears to be the projecting pin rest and part of the frame survives intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The pin rest is flat, triangular in form and with a large central moulded groove. At its base it appears to curve outwards towards a frame before terminating in old breaks, the precise form of the frame uncertain due to old breaks. The front face of the object beneath the pin rest has moulded decoration comprising a curving band of S-shaped motifs. It measures 15.0…

A cast copper-alloy buckle frame which could be Roman or early medieval in date for which no published parallel could be found. The frame is oval in shape and measures 37.05mm in width by 21.53mm in length. It is difficult to see how this frame would have functioned, the sides and one edge have a D-shaped in section (a flat back face and rounded front face) but the other possibly inner edge has a rectangular flattened part with two small transverse grooves across the centre of its edge. This edge is worn and slightly uneven, so possibly it has been modified and could perhaps have ev…

The frame has an incomplete rectangular inner edge that is square in section, projects to the side of the frame, and has a moulded groove on the front face. Cast copper alloy Late Roman /early Medieval buckle of Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA (1961). Similar in style to the two dolphin type buckles but the front of the buckle is decorated with zig zag lines. The top of the buckle does look like two heads meeting at the lozenge shape at the top but it is plain. The pin is missing. At the base there are two circular loops which would have attached to the buckle plate.

The loop at one terminal is wider than the other two, and has four lines of moulded decoration going around it, and the next two loops have three lines and two lines respectively. The buckle plate has an openwork pattern of decoration, consisting of…

A copper alloy complete buckle frame of late Roman date. This buckle is of Hawkes and Dunning type IB and are normally associated with the military (Hawkes and Dunning 1961, fig 15, a-m). The frame is D-shaped with a straight slightly narrowed bar. The back face is flat and the front face rounded. The front face is decorated and it can be seen that the curved edges of the buckle frame are formed from the flattened bodies of two confronted dolphins, which are now very stylised and decorated with tiny wavy lines, the crests of the dolphins have been developed into outwards facing ho…

A complete Roman buckle frame of Hawkes and Dunning type IIIB (Hawkes and Dunning, 1961, 59, fig 20, g, h), other examples have been found in Saxon graves in Berks and Kent(Hawkes and Dunning 1961, 60). They are 5th century in date. Buckles of type IIIB are copper alloy with a D-shaped loop terminating in stylised open-jawed animal heads confronted across the hinge bar. The plate is cast in one piece with the frame.
This example has a flat back face and a slightly faceted front face to the frame. The confronted animal heads may be a lion or other large cat, they are depicted in…

Copper-alloy buckle; C-shaped frame with scrolled terminals joined by a short horizontal bar which is enclosed by the loop of the copper-alloy pin. Below each of the scrolled terminals is a lug for attachment to the buckle plate which is now missing. The outer edges of the frame are elaborated to depict a pair of confronted animal heads while the upper surface in the vicinity of the pin has a series of parallel grooves. This is a member of a well known series of Late Roman belt fitting often associated with the army.

Buckle frame with zoomorphic decoration, of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type 1B. In poor condition and unfinished, it is D-shaped with a straight bar on which a slightly off-centre casting sprue survives; casting flashes are visible around the edge of the buckle. The outer edge is formed by two face-to-face dolphins' heads, each with a ring-and-dot eye and open jaw, with a lozengiform moulding in between. On top of the dolphins' heads, the crests have developed into back-to-back horses' heads. These are more fragmentary but again each horse has a ring-and-dot eye. Only one face of the f…

Unusual form of copper-alloy buckle, now incomplete. The frame is largely missing, but the surviving stubs of arms show them to have been curved; the frame was probably originally oval and could have held a strap of at least 30 mm wide. There is an integral plate with a deep pin slot; the pin bar is set at the far end of this slot, and on it a copper-alloy pin of a different, more greenish metal survives. The pin is as wide as the slot until it emerges into the frame; it then narrows in a step, and gently tapers to a point. Both the frame and the plate are substantial, at 4 mm thi…
