Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe or Neolithic flaked adze. It is trapezoidal in shape, expanding slightly towards the damaged end and roughly triangular in cross-section with a raised ridge running longitudinally down the centre of one face. There is a rough break across one end where a section is missing. There is invasive, scaled retouch on both faces, but this is less extensive on the flatter face. The flint is dark brown in colour with some orange staining and very little patination. A very small amount of cortex survives on both faces. Because of damage it cannot be…

A crude blade fashioned from a core. The flint is dark grey, with some blue/grey patination. From a single striking platform two blade scars extend, with a third just to the side; the central scar ends in an abrupt break where the cortex has stopped the removal, possibly the outcome that inspired the removal of the blade; however, the thick scar along one edge makes it very comfortable to hold, with a still-sharp cutting surface opposite. The reverse side shows a clear bulb of percussion and has exposed an area of weakness in the flint at the bottom of the removal. It measures 60mm…

A pebble mace head of the Mesolithic to the Neolithic period, dating to 10.000 BC - 2500 BC. It consists of an oval pebble with a slightly pointed oval cross-section, which has been perforated in the centre; the hole has circular edges on both faces and tapers towards the core of the stone with a hourglass-shaped cross-section. The precise use of these object is uncertain but are frequently referred to as mace heads or ceremonial sceptre. They do seem to relate to the less esoteric and more clearly defined polished mace and axeheads dating to the Mesolithic or Neolithic from whic…
