Record ID: NMS-052BEC
Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of an early-medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) cruciform brooch. The object consists of the zoomorphic foot below two transverse moulded ribs. Immediately above the ribs is a worn transverse break. The creature is heavily stylised, moulded pellets for eyes below two thin incised grooves representing brows. The face flattens before opening out into two flat and semi-circular nostrils which are wider than the rest of the head. The nostrils are separated by a ridge - the snout - which begins at the midpoint between the eyes and runs longitudinally, before terminating in a bifurcat…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unidentified copper-alloy object of unknown age. It is sub-circular, of fairly uniform thickness and slightly dished. It appears to be complete as there is no evidence of breaks. Close to one side there is a perfectly circular area, approximately one third of the total, which is flat. Beyond this it curves concavo-convexly in all directions all the way to the edge. On the generally convex face, the flat circle is covered with multiple very fine concentric and perfectly circular grooves and ridges. The outermost ridge is wider and expanded at one point to form a wide and short triangle…

Copper-alloy object the shape of a human head with an integral rivet or attachment stud on the reverse, probably a Roman military belt fitting. Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Head and neck of an animal figurine, apparently a dog, of unknown date. It is made of lead and may be a model for a finished version in a more durable material. It begins with a worn transverse break across the neck, which is oval (near circular) in cross-section. It soon expands in thickness and nearly twice as much in width to form the head. The head is long and sleek, with prominent cheekbones and triangular outward- and rearward-pointing ears. The top of the cranium is vaguely lozenge-shaped and the eyes are suggested by hollows between the forward end of this and the cheekbones. T…

Object type: HARNESS HOOK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete medieval copper-alloy hooked mount from a harness. It is a once flat but now slightly bent vertical bar with a narrowed and pointed rearward curving hook at the bottom. For the most part it has parallel sides and is rectangular in cross-section. The hook is oval in cross-section. At opposite end there is a double-cusp moulding (two opposing V or U-shaped depressions) followed by an incomplete rounded lobe terminating in a worn transverse break that truncates a rivet hole. There is a second, complete rivet hole at two thirds of the distance from the cusps to the hook. The met…
