It would have been roughly in the shape of a letter S. What remains is one loop of the 'snake', with the simplistic form of the head given the appearance of biting the tail, so forming a loop. The fastener has a rough, mid green patina with darker patches where rubbing may have occurred. No detail of other decoration is apparent. An early break in the body of the snake, just beyond the position of the biting jaws, suggests a cut, rather than a break, but this is uncertain. At the bend of the loop, just behind the head, there is a short flattened area along the outer edge of the body, suggesting some extension has broken away.
It s unusual for these 'snake' buckles and fasteners to have the head 'biting' the body, although there are examples of the snout joined at its tip to the body, see NLM-402ACC. The indication of an extension near the head is also unusual, although several similar fittings recorded have a separate ring in that position, see SWYOR-87C7EC. Another example, BERK-BB8967 shows how this ring would have been used to attach the buckle to a loop to which the leather or fabric of the belt would have been bound. It may be that this example had an integral loop, used in this way. No precise parallel in these aspects found on the PAS database.
Dimensions: 32.4mm in length; 23.1mm in width; 6.9mm thick; 15.24g in weight
From SWYOR-87C7EC: "Similar examples are illustrated in Gordon Bailey's Detector Finds 3 (1997), pages 20-21. Bailey states that the 'snake form belt hooks' became popular during the 16th century, where an example can be seen in the portrait of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, in about 1575. The fastener was part of a sword belt, and was used in place of the normal buckle. It is likely that these strap fittings would have been tinned or gilded. Parallels can be seen in Read's (2008) Hooked-clasps & Eyes: p. 230. The examples with snake's heads are widely considered to be late 16th to 17th century (Geake 2001: 35). The snake belt hook would seem to have fallen from fashion by the 17th century, and remained so until the end of the 18th century, when it was favoured by the military (Bailey, page 20). Fasteners with snake heads continue in use on military and coastguard belts well into the 19th century. Compare SWYOR-307D03, upon which this description is based; and several other examples on the PAS database, including SWYOR-F89F93, and SWYOR-791E44."Buckle or fastener3636155018004WILTZoomorphicSSWM2023-01-30T11:28:32Z2023-03-31T12:21:20Z15.24PAS63D7A9E00018CD23.132.4171221141425159341535815508SuffolkSuffolk CoastalKelsale cum CarltonTM406552.23085271.51309727bands.shops.handy10WILT-7B082DCopper alloy10627ZoomorphicCastIncompletePOST MEDIEVALx41047POST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderWILT7A9E08.jpg1220857images/sophaw123/EasternCertain12023-03-31T11:21:20.354Zfinds-10687141068714WILT-346213COINROMANA fragment of a Roman copper alloy nummus or radiate of uncertain ruler dating to AD 260-402.
