Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A spherical lead weight, probably a steelyard weight, of Roman or later date. It has worn surfaces and a small semi-circular suspension loop, probably made of iron, at the top. The weight is 32.44mm in diameter and weighs 158.012g. It is difficult to give a precise date for this example. It is possible that the weight is Roman in date, although its shape might indicate a later date in the Medieval or Post-medieval periods. See Bailey, 1995: pp. 31 for a similar, undated, spherical example.

A circular lead trade weight of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is circular in shape, 27.27mm in diameter, 6.73mm in thickness and weighs 28.41g, the equivalent of one ounce on the 'binary' averdepois system (see Biggs, 1993: pp. 44). The upper surface of this example is moulded, possibly in the shape of a fish head, although this is not entirely certain. It is likely to be a local trade weight probably dating to the period between c.1390 and the end of the seventeenth century AD. See Biggs, 1993: pp. 44-47.

A relatively large cast lead weight, possibly used as a spindle whorl or similar object and of probable Medieval or later date. In form it is cylindrical with flattened top and bottom surfaces and a neat central circular aperture. There are no traces of decorative elements on any of the surfaces. It measures 25.74mm in diameter, 16.68mm in height/thickness, and weighs 66.68g. This lead weight may date to the Medieval period, or perhaps earlier, although the form and neatness of the aperture, combined with the findspot, might indicate a later date int he Post-Medieval period.

A large lead weight of uncertain date. It is oval shaped in plan, sub-rectangular in section with slightly concave upper and lower faces. The sides are also slightly concave and to one side there is a slight constriction and incised groove as if something had been tied or wrapped around the entire object. A long incision is visible on one face and the entire object has numerous small incisions and pitting probably as a result of post-depositional damage. It measures 44.61mm in length, 39.07mm in width, 19.07mm in thickness, and weighs 242.17g. This weight is of uncertain date and could…

An incomplete lead weight, probably a steelyard weight of possible Roman date. In its current state the object is oval shaped in plan and conical in profile with flattened top and bottom faces and a central circular perforation. Extending from the top of the perforation, and visible at the bottom of the perforation, are two corroded lengths of iron that probably originally formed a suspension loop that is new incomplete due to old breaks. The base of the object has quite a sharp finish that may indicate it is only one half of a larger biconical weight, the remainder now missing due to …
