There is a large patch of pebble cortex remaining in the centre of one face. The edges and surfaces are heavily abraded.  Found along the north Suffolk coast on the edge of the Pakefield to Kessingland outcrop of forest bed material (see Robins et al. 2008).  Length: 121.53mm, width: 91.76mm, thickness: 29.11mm, weight: 340g

A complete probable Neolithic to Early Bronze Age lithic implement dating to circa 4000-1600 BC. Made on a tertiary flake, it is sub-ovate in plan and plano-convex in section. At one end is a pointed edge. Negative scaring on the dorsal face indicates the that the the tool was constructed through further knapping and probable functioned as a piercer, using for creating holes in leather or wood.

A complete flint bifacially worked implement of probable Neolithic date. It is an elongated sub-oval shape and symmetrical pointed oval in cross-section. There is covering, scaled retouch on both faces with some finer retouch along the sides and ends. Patchy brown patination covers a small area of flaking in the centre of one face, while there is limited patination elsewhere (perhaps suggesting that an earlier object may have been reworked?). There is very little signs of wear and a little rolling in places on the edges. The general consensus seems to be that this is an implement…

A complete flint scraper of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. A tertiary, sub-circular flake, struck with a hard hammer and with a bulb scar on the ventral face. A ridge runs across the centre of the outer face from one end to the other. There is short, abrupt, scaled retouch around the distal end and extending along the full extent of both sides of the dorsal face. There is a small amount of mottled patination on the surface, which also has a shiny gloss. Length: 42.8mm, width: 36.2mm, thickness: 8.2mm, weight: 18g

A complete retouched flint blade (possible awl/borer) of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A tertiary blade, struck using a hard hammer. It has an elongated sharp point to the right side of the distal end, which has been enhanced using a small amount of retouch. There is additional short, sub-parallel, abrupt retouch along both edges of the dorsal face and a small amount of invasive retouch in the centre of this face, running from one side of the central ridge. The flint is a dark grey colour with very little patination. Length: 51.6mm, width: 19.6mm, thickness: 6.9mm, w…

A complete knapped flint lithic implement (possibly a crude knife) dating to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age, c. 3000-1150 BC. The tool appears to have been manufactured on a broadly triangular core rejuvenation flake, the dorsal face highly 'humped' and demonstrating numerous intersecting blade/flake negatives. The ventral face has been worked inversely, with large invasive removals (perhaps soft hammer) creating a rather crude edge. A notch is visible in the opposing edge, though whether this is a knapped feature or simply edge damage remains unclear. Preserved in somewhat patinate…

A complete knapped flint lithic implement dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, c. 4000-1500 BC. The implement probably represents a bifacially worked knife, consisting an elongated sub-triangular flake with a rounded butt, pointed tip and lenticular cross-section. It has been manufactured on a dark bluish-grey piece of fine-grained flint, with some iron staining and small white inclusions visible. The original support for this tool seems to have consisted a relatively large secondary or tertiary flake, with one edge still demonstrating the remains of a patinated outer white surface.…

A complete flint late Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint implement, possibly a knife. It is roughly triangular in shape with a shorter straight side and two outwards curving longer sides. It is oval in cross-section and bifacially worked. There is low angle, scaled retouch covering both faces with a small amount of cortex remaining in places on both. There is an unworked section on one face behind the straight side, which is still covered with a thick whitish patina. The two longer sides coverge to produce a rounded point with some damage around it. The flint is a mottled dark grey c…

A flint object of uncertain form or function. It is struck from a mottled grey flint and is roughly oval in form with a pointed oval cross section. One end has had transverse flake removal producing a flattened platform with visible incipient cones of percussion. Along both sides of the object are multiple crude and uneven flake scars, while the surviving complete end has a crushed or battered appearance. This perhaps points to either the survival of parts of the original exterior surface of the flint nodule, or the object suffering from (possibly deliberate?) damage or crushing to th…

An incomplete flint implement, probably a scraper, of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. It is roughly triangular in shape with a rounded point at the distal end and is formed on a secondary flake with cortex still covering the right side of the dorsal face. There are long, narrow flaking scars on the dorsal face and very fine, short, low angle, parallel retouch along the left side of the dorsal face. There is an abrupt break across the proximal end and the fragment was probably part of a larger implement originally. The flint is grey-brown in colour. Length: 35.08mm, wid…

A ?complete flint implement of probable palaeolithic date. It is large, roughly oval in shape and triangular in cross-section. Cortex still covers part of the dorsal face. There is a lot of damage around all sides of the butt end and the bulb of percussion is not visible. There are a few long, thin flaking scars at the distal end of the dorsal face and a small amount of irregular retouch around this edge, but this is crude and as such the object is difficult to classify as a formal tool type. All faces are covered in an orange patina as a probable result of deposition in river gravels…

A ?complete flint implement of probable palaeolithic date. It is a large natural flake, roughly triangular in shape, but there appears to be a some irregular, short, abrupt retouch along two of the sides. This is very crude and as such the object is difficult to classify as a formal tool type. The majority of both faces is covered in an orange patina as a probable result of deposition in river gravels, suggesting a palaeolithic date, but one end has a milky grey patina probably from where it was in contact with a different type of deposit. A complete flint (probable) Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint implement. It is pentagonal in shape with a long, pointed left side, which appears to have been formed deliberately via the removal of a flake on each side. The object may therefore have functioned as an awl or borer of some kind, but as there is little other evidence of retouch it is difficult to offer a formal identification. Several small flakes have been removed from each face and from the right edge of the dorsal face. It is mid-grey in colour with an unusually shiny patina. Length: 61.87mm, width: 39.84mm, thickn…

A struck flint lithic implement of uncertain type. The object is a roughly triangular natural flake with hinge fracture at the broadest end, the flint being a mottled grey/brown in colour. At the pointed end one face has several irregular and low angled flake scars. Both edges have crude short, scaled and abrupt retouch resulting in relatively blunt edges. The entire object measures 76.34mm in length, 49.61mm in width, 9.33mm in thickness, and 35.44g in weight. The precise function of this object remains uncertain. The retouch is crude, but seemingly deliberate, although precisely …

An unpatinated struck flint implement of uncertain form, possibly an ovate or a roughout for an axe or similar implement. It is struck from a mottled pale grey flint and is of crude handaxe form with pointed oval cross-section, tapering in profile at both ends. The object has very crude bifacial working, although some of the flakes, particularly at each end, may well be the result of damage rather than deliberate striking of the flint. It measures 114.88mm in length, 66.28mm in width, 27.19mm in thickness, and 165.80g in weight. This is a flint object of uncertain function. It is p…
