Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Description: A complete but broken cast silver annular buckle dating to the Medieval period, c. 1200-1400. It demonstrates a plain circular-sectioned frame with a break on one edge, around which is wrapped a straight blunt-ended pin. Dimensions: in its opened-out state, the brooch measures 46.14mm in length and 2.01mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 1.84g. Discussion: A similar object has been recorded on the PAS database as WILT-50B487. This item has been identified as a buckle rather than a brooch as the pin is free-moving and not held in place by means of a constriction.…

Description: A fragment of a silver artefact, possible a buckle tongue. The fragment is a flattened crescentic shape with a short lug, approx. 3.6mm long, 7.3mm wide and c.4.4mm thick, projecting from the centre of its longer inner edge and culminating in a rough break. The inner edge of the fragment is stepped and the outer edge is curved but has the appearance of being distorted from a straighter shape. One face of the fragment is decorated with an outer border, approx. 3mm wide, consisting of a narrow groove along each edge and two incised, parallel zigzag lines between. Th…

A gilded silver fragment of an early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) unidentified object. The fragment consists of a flattened, curved strip with a rough break across either end. Its outer face features chip carved decoration consisting of a groove along the inner edge and three running spirals in the centre, each with a groove curving from its centre over the outer edge of the following spiral. The outer face of the fragment is heavily gilded. Overall the artefact appears slightly distorted, which may be due to melting.

An incomplete silver buckle of early medieval date. The buckle loop is 'D' shaped and circular in section, with a silver tongue wrapped around the strap bar. The loop is attached to a rectangular plate comprising a piece of sheet metal wrapped around the strap bar with a central rectangular cut-out for the tongue. The terminal end is pierced by two parallel rivet holes, one of which still houses a silver circular-sectioned dome-headed rivet with a gold beaded wire collar.

Description: A complete early medieval silver buckle frame, oval with a flat reverse and rounded front and so roughly D-shaped in cross-section. The frame is chunky, measuring c. 6-7mm in width and c.7-8mm in thickness. It has a U-section groove forming a pin rest in the centre of its outer edge. The short bar is narrowed, particularly on the inner edge, and is covered in iron corrosion, presumably from the missing iron pin. There is also some iron corrosion on the reverse of the frame, underneath the pin rest. Otherwise the metal is a silvery grey in colour. Dimensions: 31.40mm in…

Description: An unusual complete silver buckle with Trewhiddle-style decoration made from five different components all of which appear to be made from the same metal. It has an elongated D-shaped frame, with a sub-rectangular cross-section decorated with four bands of short transverse grooves on the upper face; there is also a grooved pin rest in the centre of the outer edge. The terminals of the frame are flattened ovals with circular holes through them, through which a silver cylindrical bar runs. One terminal of this bar has a domed head and the other is merely burred over, giving…

Description: Circular object made from gilded silver. It consists of a thick, almost-circular disc, with both faces deeply recessed. The front has chip-carved relief decoration of a cross, with each arm made up of a clockwise-turning spiral. There originally appears to have been a small raised three-sided pyramid between each terminal, but only one of these now survives as the others have been largely destroyed by the punching of neat circular holes through them. The three holes thus formed are all about 2mm in diameter, and they have raised edges to both front and reverse. They cut t…

Silver buckle, burnt and partially melted, probably during a cremation ceremony. The buckle has a large oval frame and pin which are attached to a small flattened semi-circular plate. Length 39mm, width 27mm, weight 17.4g. X-ray fluorescence at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content of 79%. This type of buckle is well known on the Continent from the late 5th century, and examples are very occasionally found in early Anglo-Saxon contexts. See Treasure Annual Report 2000, no. 71.
